Blanton’s Bottle Letters – Blanton’s, named after Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton, was launched in 1984 as an export-only single barrel bourbon. Even in Japan, 1984-1987 bottles are very rare. ’88 and ’89 bottles are more affordable, while 1990s bottles are quite common.

Usually getting to know a bottle of Blanton’s is easy. Just look for the “reset date” handwritten on each bottle. However, sometimes the release date is missing from the label or, in the case of an auction, the date is not shown on the available photos of the bottle. In order to establish a rough date in such cases, I traced the year in which certain aspects of the bottle changed. The following information applies to the original Blanton single barrel shotgun. This may apply to other bottles, but I have not verified that this is the case.

Blanton’s Bottle Letters

The first key change concerns the tag. From 1984 to 1990, the phrase “Why this could be the best bottle of whiskey ever made.” (see rights) was printed on the front of the tag in lettered script. No other text or images appear on the front of labels from that era.

In 1990 the tag was changed. From that point on, the phrase “The world’s best single barrel bourbon” was printed in capital letters on the top half of the front of the tag. The image of a horse and a rider was printed below. This type of label persists to this day.

The second key change concerns the neck label. From 1984 to 1993, the phrase “Blanton Distilling Company” was printed in type on a neck label (see below). All words were printed in the same size.

In late 1993, the neck label was changed. From that point on, the phrase “Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon ウイスキー” was printed on the neck label in Japan, while the phrase “Blanton’s the Original Single Barrel Bourbon” was printed on the neck label elsewhere. This type of neck label continues to this day.

The last key change concerns bottle caps. From 1984 to 1998, the cork featured a running horse (see below). Horse casting tends to be rougher in 1980s and early 1990s bottles. For example, sometimes there is some metal left between the horse’s body and the horse’s legs.

Sometime in 1999 the horse stopper was replaced. From that point on, one of the letters in the word “Blanton” was added near the horse’s legs. If the stoppers are positioned to pronounce “Blanton”, the various stages of the race also overlap. Since there are two “n”s in the word “Blanton’s”, the second “n” is marked with two dots to the right of the letter.

Hang tag changed from “Why this might be the best bottle of whiskey ever made”. to “The World’s Best Single Barrel Bourbon”.

Fretboard label changed from “Blanton Distilling Co.” to “Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon ウイスキー” in Japan and “Blanton’s the Original Single Barrel Bourbon” in other countries.

Bottles of Blanton’s from the 1990s or 2000s usually cost about the same price as a current bottle of Blanton’s. Bottles of 1988 or 1989 Blanton’s typically cost about twice as much as a current bottle of Blanton’s. Blanton’s is one of the most popular and advertised bourbons. Week after week, even in the search that brings people to this site, Blanton comes up everywhere… The only thing I found was a bottle I bought off the shelf 8 or 9 years ago. However, my relatives recently visited the Buffalo Trace Distillery and were able to buy one bottle each, and they were kind enough to send one to me.

Blanton bills itself as “Original Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey” and I can’t wait to see if the bourbon lives up to the ad. Let’s start.

Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon 375ml

On the nose, it was pretty easy for me. I took a lot of oak with hints of vanilla. The Duchess called the nose simple, but Macmillionaire caught tobacco, leather and barn smell.

When I put it in my mouth, the taste is not too complex, but it is very pleasant in the mouth and tastes like a good bourbon should be. As for expressions, the Duchess chose mineral and stone, while Macmillioner opted for sweet notes, light spice and honey.

For me it was tasty, but not as hard as others, but I liked to drink straight with ice.

All three of us agreed that the finish is smooth with a lingering warmth. It’s not powerful. I found it more enjoyable with a splash of water, but that’s personal preference. The finish is top notch and it’s the second highest rating I’ve given to a finish, so
