So, how do you follow a graphic design process?? See the post here where I describe how to follow a graphic crochet pattern.

Another option is to make this into a Hot Pad instead of a Washcloth!! Do so using a small hook. I recommend a 5.0mm H hook. This will give tighter stitches. You can also make 2 and sew or stitch them together for extra heat protection! Perfect for placing those hot pans on your table too.

Pattern 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across (30) work in the back bump of the chain. ch 1 and turn

Row 2-30: sc across, next image and changing colors as needed. Do not finish in each color, use bobbins as described in this post here. (30) ch 1 and turn

Edging – ch 1, turn and sc down the side of the transfer pattern 1 sc at the end of each row. sc across the bottom ch, up the other side, and across the top of row 30. Knit and finish off.

If you are doing it as a hot pad, use a 5.0mm H hook. Do 1 at the beginning of the selection. Make another one that doesn’t start in the first color used. Sew or sew the two stitches together. This will provide additional heat protection. I do not recommend using it as a hot pad as a layer.

But there are some techniques you can do to help you perfect them! I am here to help you with this post of How to Follow a Crochet Graph Pattern. If you still have questions, just comment below or shoot me an email at jessica@

So to start, see the picture below. It is 30 blocks wide by 30 blocks high. The blocks can represent a single stitch, like a crochet, a cluster of stitches, or corner to corner blocks. The pattern should tell you what stitch is required/recommended.

I created this pattern for the Beginner Washcloth Crochet Patternand each block represents a single crochet stitch. So this pattern is 30 stitches by 30 rows. See the remaining letters and pattern here.

Images are run from left to right (if right-handed) for one line, then reversed and run right to left for the next. And it works from the bottom up. Row 1 is taken on the right side (RS) and row 2 is the wrong side (WS).

Easy Ways To Crochet Letters Onto Blankets

You will see in this picture that the first 7 rows are solid color and you can choose white or any color you want. So, you will chain 31, sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and each chain across. Then complete your 7 rows.

Since we are working in rows back and forth. Row 8 will run on WS, from right to left. SC in the first 11 stitches, change colors, etc…. Now this is where things can get tricky and messy if you’re not careful.

With changing colors, I want to pick up the lighter color (which means to crochet on it until you get to the next color change), but not pick up the dark color because you can always see through the bowls. Or if I can find a lighter color, I’ll use several different bobbins.

So, what are bobbins?? You can buy bobbins like these Clovers, or use what I used…clips from the dollar tree! Take a notebook or a paper or anything that has a little weight and cut your clips on it. Wrap the clips around the clips. As the picture below.

I moved the gray in the photo, so there is only black on the bobbins. But if it shows through the movement, I would have added the bobbins with gray.

As you can see, you will stumble across, then pick up that thread when you get to that color on the pictures.

Change the colors by finishing the stitch all the way until the last step (for sc, 2 loops on the hook) drop the color you are using and take the new color. Finish the stitch with the new color by slipping on and working through both loops on the hook. Either leave that old color, or pass it on by painting over it.

This technique works best with the bobbins directly in front of you while you crochet. When you reach the end of a row and change your work, also change the bobbins (which is why I recommend something strong to connect them). Turning the bobbins every time you turn your work will make things messy!

Continue working the chart with dropping and lifting yarn. This may seem confusing at first, but you’ll quickly get the hang of it. Weave in your ends when finished, taking care to match the colors.
