Smart In Bubble Letters – As ever a college teacher, I have seen a lot of handwriting in my day, quite a frequent variant including the “bubble” style handwriting, large and round (some examples here). Today, in the coffee shop, I listened to the dense and impetuous conversation of a middle-aged woman, and suddenly thought (completely unjustly), “I bet she has a handwriting with a big bubble.” On reflection, I realized that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such handwriting style on a person I would characterize as highly intelligent. [I know there are about a billion different and hotly contested ways of defining intelligence, but for the purposes of this question I will use a narrow and book-savvy definition of “highly intelligent” as “capable, assuming the right requirements, of relatively easy earning A’s in both your average bachelor’s level multivariable calculus course and your average undergraduate history course.”]

I know this bubble handwriting is a little more common among girls, but I’ve known several guys who wrote this way too, and none of them were particularly smart. And I also know a whole host of highly intelligent women and skilled scholars (by my definition), none of whom have bubble handwriting, although many of them are the same age and have had exactly the same writing skills as the ‘bubblers’.

Bright. My question: Are there any examples, either from the annals of history or from one’s personal experience, that refute this hypothesis? And if the raw association exists, what the hell could be causing this?

I also realize that any question that honestly discusses the intelligence of the human population in general is likely to generate a lot of hate, but I’m genuinely curious about this, and in no way look for reasons to be the bubblers of the world.
