Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player wants to write words both horizontally and vertically.
Next to the crossword puzzle will be a series of questions or clues that relate to the various rows or lines of squares in the crossword puzzle. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question with the same number of letters as the squares in the related crossword puzzle line or line.
Some words will share letters, so they will have to match each other. Words can vary in length and complexity, as can clues.
The wonderful thing about crosswords is that they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword puzzle for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Word of the Day: Dorothy LAMOUR (27D: Dorothy from the old “Road” movies) – Dorothy Lamour (born Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton; December 10, 1914 – September 22, 1996) was an American actress and singer. He is best remembered for appearing in the hit comedy series Road to… movies starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Lamour began his career as a big bandsinger in the 1930s. In 1936, he moved to Hollywood and signed with Paramount Pictures. Her appearance as Ulah in The Jungle Princess (1936) brought her fame and marked the beginning of her image as the “SarongQueen”. In 1940, Lamour made his first serial comedy film Road to Singapore. The Road series films were popular in the 1940s. The sixth film in the series, Road to Bali, was released in 1952. (wikipedia)
He had a few problems in the middle of this, but otherwise a pretty normal Friday. A little heavy on the names, but maybe that’s just SE, where BADU BENES HEIDI and TOO $hort all cross each other more than a little more than a RAND / O’NEIL cross. LAMOUR and LASSER are old names that could also cause problems (although LASSER is or was quite common at one point). All the names are fine, individually. Perfect for doing crossword puzzles. There were many piled up, which can make resolution difficult, as proper nouns are either feast or famine to resolve. NW was, oddly enough, the easiest part of the puzzle for me. Normally, starting can be a lot of sputter, but I went to the little guy (FAD ) early, and that “F” terminal got me a LITTLE—and thus the first letters of All the Crosses in that section. LACUNA is a hard word, but it’s one I know, so I made quick work of that NW section. It was only when I hit the center that I had trouble—a complete break, in fact. See where my problem lies:
Well, ENO, obviously (30D: 1980’s “Kiss Kiss Kiss”) singer/songwriter. I actually had ONO at first, but -YLO looked bad at 29-Across, so I took it out. Instead of NESTLÉ I also have NESTEA in 25D: the parent company of Gerber and Lean Cuisine. That’s the real killer, because the two letters that reach the empty part of the network are wrong, giving me false supports. Bad news. Even though it was at the top of A-K- 28D: 13, for many (AGE AWKWARD ), I couldn’t see it (I wanted something like “unlucky number”). The only thing that pisses me off about the *puzzle* and not myself is 27A: the modern talking entry (LOL ). I’ve been online for, well, a while, and I don’t know what “LOLspeak” is. LOLcats, yes. LOL talk, no. Lulz, yeah, LOLspeak…I can’t even imagine. wait Wow, ok, looks like LOLspeak is the language of LOLcats. The ungrammatical language of cat memes. OK
When I googled “LOLspeak”, LOLcat came up. I love cats, but the whole LOLcat thing got old really fast. It all feels very 15 years ago, which is a lot less “modern” than the clues suggest. I really hope you know LOLspeak, or know Dorothy LAMOUR, because that crossing might seem tough otherwise. I briefly thought the actress was Dorothy MALONE (I had just seen “Written on the Wind”), and was eager to find out what MOLspeak was. But then I fixed it.

I think MADE BANK is my favorite thing in this grid (13D: Dragged in Dough). AWKWARD AGE is also nice, although the clue threw me off a bit. And the CEREAL CORRIDURA and its clue (53A: Lifestyle?) are very nice. Although I talk about her whenever I teach the Aeneid, I never think of Helen as a DEMI-GODESS, but of course she is, just as (technically) Aeneas is a demigod (mother = Venus). Helen was the offspring of Leda (a mortal princess) and Swan (the notorious shape-shifter Zeus). What else? Oh, so many women online, so prominent, in large part because the rule is reversed. In fact, men are better represented on this network than women on the typical NYTXW network. It’s nice to see an effort here to even things out a bit, although it shouldn’t be female builders who are solving this problem.
Finally, if you don’t get a clue in VOWELS (37A: The whole set in musical comedy?), it means that the whole set of VOWELS (a e i o u and even y) can only be found in the phrase “musical comedy”. See you tomorrow… A head shape, usually made of cork or polystyrene covered with canvas, for fitting, washing, coloring and styling a wig.
