“I always watch ballpark highlights,” said Ling, a Bismarck Century High School graduate. “I watch their hands, what they do with their hands and how they regulate their movements.”
That attention to detail has helped the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Lingley elevate his game the past few seasons. He has been a fixture on the Dragons’ defense since joining the football program in 2014 when he played as a true freshman.
“He’s really dedicated,” said Dragons defensive end Jake Buss, of Waseca, Minn. “He is a student of the game. He knows his stuff. He watches movies. He knows what’s going on.”
The Dragons host Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Alex Nemzek Stadium for their home opener.

MSUM is coming off a 38-7 win against Augustana last Saturday. The Dragons limited the Vikings to 127 yards.
“It was good to have a dominant defensive performance against a good team on the road, something we haven’t done in my time here,” said Dragons head coach Steve Laqua, in his seventh season as head coach. “That was good.”
Lingle has been a starter on MSUM’s defense, playing in all 32 games since joining the program. He made 20 starts.
“He’s really brought a sense of stability to our program,” Laqua said. “He played a lot of videos. He understood the vision we wanted for our program for our defense from a very early age. He’s one of those guys who totally bought in and led by example.”

Lingley was used to success when he arrived at MSUM. He played in two North Dakota Class 3A state championship games for Century. The Dragons, however, began the 2014 season losing seven of their first eight games.
“It was tough,” Ling said. “I had high expectations because the program was building, it was kind of a shock to me.”
The Dragons began to turn around late in Lingle’s freshman season, winning their final three games to finish 4-7. The program has been on the rise ever since. The Dragons posted a 6-5 record in 2015 and 7-4 last fall.
The defense of MSUM played a role in that improvement. The Dragons allowed 45.1 points per game in 2014, 33.1 points per game in 2015 and 29.5 points per game last season.

Ling, a history major, spent part of last summer on Capitol Hill interning for U.S. Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.
“It was amazing to be able to turn on the TV and what they talked about every day on TV was where you worked,” Lingle said.
“I don’t know when he’s going to make his presidential bid, but he’s probably going to be here soon,” Busse said with a laugh.
Lingle said that while politics may be in her future, she will go to law school first. He also has to retire from football. Last weekend’s win at Augustana was a good start to his final season. The Vikings were picked fourth in the NSIC preseason poll, while the Dragons were picked seventh in the 16-team league.
