THEME: “Empty Expressions” – The puzzle has eight empty squares, each of which is at the intersection of two two-syllable phrases (an empty square separates the two parts of each answer). What goes in these squares? Well, nothing … but if, when you’re done, you fill each square with a letter that makes sense in both directions (regardless of the clues), then those letters, reading from L to R, top to bottom, will make a spell. phrase: SPACE OUT (that’s a pun!)

Word of the Day: Warp Zone (hypothetical phrase with a “P” added to 36-Across) — Awarp, also known as aportalorteleporter, is a video game design element that allows the player character to instantly travel between two locations or levels. The specific area that allows such travel is called a warp zone. A warp zone can be a secret passageway only accessible to players capable of finding it, but they are also commonly used as a primary method of travel in certain games. Warp zones can be deliberately set up in puzzles, used to avoid danger in sections of the game that have been completed before, be something the player can abuse for cheating, or used as punishment for a player straying from the “correct” path. In some games, the player can only use warps to travel to places they have visited before. Because of this, the player must travel along a regular route at least once, but is not required to travel the same routes again if they need to visit earlier locations in the game. Finding warp zones can become a natural goal of a game session, used as a control point. Although it is not clear which video game first used areas or teleportation devices, this element has been traced back to MUDs, where it allowed connected rooms to not be “topologically correct” if necessary. This element was later popularized by Super Mario Bros., where secret areas, called warp zones in the game, allowed players to skip ahead in the game.

There is a lot to cover here. First of all … I don’t know if I would have thought to fill in those blank squares if I didn’t have the “Puzzle Notes” … I don’t know what those notes looked like in the app or on the web, but in my software supplies they just popped up. In fact, this is what it turned out to be:

But it was so fast (I must have hit a key or cursor before reading the message) that I assumed the notes had popped up and went looking for them. And they sound like this:

The “empty” gimmick became apparent pretty quickly, at the DEAD HEAD / LEGAL ID transition, so I just resolved the thing as a themeless one that had a bunch of unexpected empty squares. Somewhere around the 1/3 mark I noticed that HARD ASS was just HARD PASS without the “P” which made me see if I could fill in the other empty squares with plausible letters. I saw that the first three squares were labeled “SPA-” and knew I was on to something. But it didn’t change the way the puzzle was played. It was mostly unthemed with holes. Absolutely zero actual puzzle content (i.e. clues/answers) related to voids, holes, gaps or otherwise. The theme is completely structural / visual, with a bonus phrase that is the only real play on words. And I don’t mind that. I think the “bonus phrase” is cute, and the grid (this time on a Sunday) is strong enough on its own to make the decision process overall enjoyable. I’m not sure exactly how SPACE OUT is intended to be used. You have to put in a space for the hints to work…but I guess if you fill those spaces with letters then those crossword answers won’t have spaces anymore so the spaces have been removed…yeah that’s good enough for me. I won’t comment on the absolute disaster that the online puzzle experience has become for many puzzlers because it wasn’t my experience, but let’s just say that if you’re having trouble getting a website or app to take your ready grid , you are not alone, not for long. I’ve been told that just putting an “X” in those places works…but it all seems pretty confusing and sketchy. There’s a reason I don’t care about “strips” and continue to solve NYT crosswords in good “old” .puz (or paper) format.

The puzzle started off very inauspiciously, with PHLEGMY. Consider the atmosphere of your puzzles. No one, but no one wants to face PHLEGM in their puzzles, and PHLEGMY is somehow worse. I would agree with PHLEGMATIC, as it can be taken figuratively, that is, in a non-corporeal fluid. But oh, PHLEGMY , it’s just … nasty … and wow, yeah, on top of “WAP ” (27A: 2020 #1 hit for Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion), PHLEGMY is really really … something. Speaking of “WAP”, congrats to this puzzle for hitting the grid with both “shack” (the “P” in “WAP”) and “fuck” (“the F” in “WTF”) … and “f***” -likeFRAK to boot! (88D: Toning down swearing on “Battlestar Galactica”). Throw in RANDOM SEX and pop star DUA LIP and you’ll see that Puzzle is trying very hard to make you feel its edgy youth, and I guess I don’t mind. It’s better than the smug, old-fashioned atmosphere that still manages to permeate so many puzzles. I’ll take all the swearing and references to sex over really nasty stuff like PHLEGMY or ELON, for god’s sake (ugh, why, god, why? Can’t I ever hear that name [grawlix grawlix grawlix]!? ) (69A: The first name among billionaires) Mysterious crosswords may seem completely impenetrable to beginners, but anyone can learn to solve them. Here you’ll find a quick introduction to the most common types of prompts and how they work. After reading this, you’ll have everything you need to start solving cryptic crosswords. They can be difficult at first, but with a little patience and persistence, you’ll soon get the hang of it.

New Scientist crossword puzzles follow the same rules as other UK publications. Many of our hints and answers will also include some general science knowledge, so it helps if you read regularly

Or other popular science material, but you don’t need a degree or special knowledge to get most of the answers. If the answer is an obscure word, the setter usually makes the pun relatively simple so that you can work out the answer even if you don’t know the word. And feel free to look things up – the only person who can decide what counts as cheating is you!

Part of the hint will define the answer or tell you its meaning more or less directly. This part will either be at the beginning or end of the prompt. The rest of the clue will be a form of wordplay that will lead you to the answer in a more roundabout way. For example:

Usually the word in the clue is replaced by an abbreviation in the answer, so “energy” here means E, as in E=mc2. The placement of the E in the name of the French city of Nice makes NIECE, which also means “relative”.

Tricky Crossword Clues And Answers Suggested By The Experts

When you read a clue, it’s usually best to start by guessing which part is the definition, and which part requires you to play with the words a bit. You’ll get better at it with practice, but an easy way to tell the difference is to look for wordplay indicators—words or phrases that are a sure sign that something mysterious is going on. In the examples below, the clues include only one type of pun, but often you’ll see clues that combine more than one type.

Some letters or words in the clue must be rearranged to form the answer. Anagrams can be indicated by words such as bad or broken, or words that refer to change or movement. The anagram pointer words are clicked below.

The answer is hidden somewhere in the hint. This can be indicated by a word like hidden or a word like some or part. Again, the indicator word has been underlined below.

The clue refers to the word that sounds like the word in the answer. This can be indicated by words such as reported, heard or in a podcast.

If the answer has a double meaning, the prompt may give you two different definitions. If the clue consists of only two words, there is a good chance that it is a double definition. Very occasionally you may see a hint that is a triple definition.
