The words are from the English hymn writer Isaac Watts, based on Psalm 98 of the Bible. The song first appeared in Watts’ collection in 1719; The Psalms of David: Imitated in the Language of the New Testament, and applied to the Christian State and Worship. Watts wrote the words to “Joy to the World” as a hymn celebrating Christ’s triumphant return at the end of the age, not as a song celebrating His first coming. Only the second half of Watts’ texts are still used today.

The music was adapted and arranged by Lowell Mason to a text by Watts in 1839 from an older tune believed to be by Handel, not least because the chorus theme (And heaven and nature sing…) appears in the orchestral opening and Comfort ye is the recitative accompaniment from Handel’s Messiah, and the first four notes fit the beginning of the choruses. However, Handel did not compose the entire melody. The name “Antiochia” is usually used for the tune.
