This paper demonstrates the premise that the utopian language created for the narrative is more than something that merely conveys an impression of alienation to the utopian invented nation, a mere representation of an outside culture. Rather, it is a semiotic system devised by the author specifically for the purpose of conveying a message. As such it is indispensable to a full understanding of More’s work, and therefore worthy of proper investigation. Consequently, the paper analyzes the occurrences of invented language throughout the author’s text and finds, word by word, possible analogies and meanings in the writings of Peter Giles, comparing cognate or cognate words in other languages, While glossopoeia with the assumptions of semiotics. Some theorists and commentators make substantial contributions to the current debate: Koller (1981.

Such reflections resulted in a critique of names and a theory on artificial vocabulary developed by Thomas More.

Several early editions of Thomas More’s “Utopia,” first published in 1516, include the Utopian alphabet as well as a quatrain of poetry in Utopian and its Latin transliteration. This essay traces the material conditions of the utopian alphabet, exploring the intellectual contexts and epistemological questions that underlie its presence in these early editions and its absence in others. Reproduced by four early modern European printers via woodcut, metal type, or engraved plate, the alphabet in its materiality becomes a key component of the “utopia” that print technology and the broader intellectual and geographical clarifies the intersection between a vast humanity stretching to the horizon.
