This pkt was perfect for my Workday Class. The customer service provided was exceptional! There was a strange problem and the store owner helped me with the problem and made sure I could access my purchase. It was almost time for bed and since I am a procrastinator I panicked when I realized how late it was. The owner still helped me until everything was fine. I will buy from this seller again.

In 20 campaigns, a hundred battlefields, nearly a thousand camp fires, I have seen that steadfast fortitude, that patriotic self-sacrifice and that indomitable determination that have etched his image in the hearts of his people. From one end of the world to the other he has deepened the cup of courage.
Gen. Douglas MacArthur had never met Pvt. Foster Sisson or Army Sgt. Gabriel De Roo when he presented that touching description of the American soldier’s duty, honor and valor to the West Point cadets.
De Roo, a native of Paw Paw, and Sisson, of Hastings, worked on battlefields separated by cause, continents and more than 140 years. But the letters preserved by the families of Sisson, a Union soldier in the Civil War, and De Roo, a Marine who deployed twice to Iraq, reveal shared themes of faith and humanity that have lost nothing in the translation of time.
Americans remember the sacrifices of those who died in military service. But unlike the speeches and ceremonies that will mark Memorial Day on Monday, the stories of Sisson and De Roo are best told in the letters they wrote to the homes of the people they loved as husbands, sons and fathers and mourned their deaths as American heroes.

Sisson’s early letters from the internment camp describe the soldiers’ rations and advise his wife on managing the family farm.
But as the Civil War raged, the letters he wrote while the guns were shouting loudly revealed a growing heart and loneliness for his wife and three children. Yet during America’s bloodiest war, enduring hunger and pollution, he kept his oath to defend the Union.
“Don’t let little Clarry forget where I am,” Sisson wrote to his wife, Sarah, about their 3-year-old daughter. “I’m afraid you’ll forget about me before I come back.”

“I miss you all so much,” De Roo wrote when he started basic training in early 2003. “Please feel free to write when you all get a chance; it would be good to hear about what’s going on at home… Please don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine.”
“Pray that I live as an example of godliness to those around me and give 100 percent every time,” he wrote to his parents, later adding, “Send a family photo or two if you have a chance.
It would be up to Sarah Sisson to tell Clara about her “Paw” with Hannah De Roo, Gabriel’s wife of two years, to raise the couple’s infant son, Gabe.
Sisson, 39, died on March 31, 1865, after Confederate fire blew out part of his skull just days before the end of the Civil War.

De Roo, 25, died on August 20, 2006, of a gunshot wound in Iraq. De Roo had bent over backwards to assure the captured Iraqi snipers that American soldiers intended to arrest them, not kill them. As he stood up, the rifleman’s sledgehammer hit him in the neck through the gap between his helmet and bulletproof vest.
Foster and Sarah Sisson owned a farm in Barry County and had three children – Hudson, 9; Lewis, 7; and Clara – when Foster joined the Union Army with his two brothers and brother-in-law in September 1864.
“He got a $100 signing bonus for signing up and $100 could feed his family for a long time in those days,” said Foster’s grandson, Lyle “Skip” Sisson, 72, a retired Sturgis Public Schools superintendent whose family preserved Civil War books. “It was probably as much work as it was for them.”
Sisson wrote 13 letters to his wife between September 1864 and March 1865, the last of which was written just a week before her brother carried her, mortally wounded, from the battlefield in North Carolina.

His letters focused on his family, asking for news from home and advice from Sarah about running the farm in his absence. There is no heroism on the battlefield.
“Write about everything you can think of,” urged Sara,
