In horse racing, the furlong is a unit of distance equal to one-eighth of a mile. In other words, a horse needs to run eight furlongs to complete a mile-long race.

The word “furlong” comes from the Old English word “furrow”, which means the distance a horse can plough in a day. Today, horse racing is usually done on dirt or turf tracks, some measured in yards, not furlongs.

Going back to its origins, furlang is a combination of two other “Old English” words, furh and lang. Furh, which translates to furrow, is a ditch plowed in a field.
