Word of the Day: TIKI(5A: The First Man, in Maori Mythology) — In Maori mythology, the Tiki were first created by TumatauengaorTane. He found the first woman, Maricorico, in the pond; he seduced her and she became Hine-kau-ataata. By extension, an atiki is a large or small wood or stone carving of a humanoid form, but this is a somewhat archaic usage in Maori. Carvings similar to tikis and depicting deified ancestors are found in many Polynesian cultures. They often serve to mark the boundaries of sacred or important places. (wikipedia)
Cain’s Jawbone: The Literary Puzzle That Only 4 People Have Solved
Hello, and congratulations on the stupidest “holiday” of the year. After my workout on Monday, my trainer at the gym said, “Okay, I’ll see you on Friday…April Fool’s Day.” To that I sarcastically said “great”. He said, “Don’t worry, I won’t do anything, I’ll be here, as usual” (I think he’s telling the truth – I’ll find out in a few hours). And he said, “You think people grow out of it.” Yes, yes it would. But no…here comes the gotcha-er’s attempts at predictability. I live in a world that is absolutely drowning in misinformation, 24/7, and it is literally killing us all, so yeah, I don’t have time for this ‘day’, or even the nastiness of it. You know what this puzzle did—it took away my Friday puzzles. If you think this is entertainment, you and I are very different. As you know if you’ve been reading this blog for long, Friday is the best day. It’s the day I’ve been looking forward to, the day NYTXW hits its mark and delivers the pleasure of zooming in that I’ve always been chasing but rarely get from my puzzles. solution mode. But no, I have this pun on “solutions” with its little “look what I did there” post-solution flourishes. [Extremely deep sigh]. I chose the wrong month to stop drinking.
5. Chemistry. a. the homogeneous dispersion process of gas, liquid or solid substances without chemical change in gas, liquid or solid state. b. a substance such as sugar or salt in solution. c. a homogeneous, molecular mixture of two or more substances. (dictionary.com)
And your responses to today’s thread seem like a lot of stated “solutions” but I never think about them. I see three household cleaners and some SALT WATER. Maybe that’s the point — you don’t think about them that way, and maybe (just maybe) you don’t get the “decision” “joke” right away. Or not at all. Do not know. I know “A-N-O-T-H-E-R-O-N-E” is a big “B-E-S-U-R-E-T-O-D-R-I-N- K-Y-O-U-R-O-V-A-L-T-I-N-E” energy. Like Ralphie, I was devastated when he interpreted that message in A Christmas Story.
I’ve only struggled in the NW area, where nothing but an ATM came out on my first pass (20A: Vegas machine with the best chance?). But I managed to get back into this chapter later after getting the last ending of MOUTH. My most embarrassing moment (considering my wife is from New Zealand) was putting MAUI instead of TIKI in 5A: The First Person, in Maori mythology, but I felt a little bad when I looked up Maui and noticed that Maui is one of the Maori names. Maui-TIKITIKI. Also, if you thought Maui was just an island, here it is:

Maui (Maui) is the hero and trickster of the great culture of Polynesian mythology. Maui was rarely worshipped, he was less of a deity and more of a folk hero. Its origins vary from culture to culture, but many of its core virtues remain relatively similar. (wikipedia)
Well, at least I had INACAN to comfort me after I botched that answer… [yet another deep sigh].
Since “Topic” excludes a number of answers, the only NEWS ANSWER today is NEWS (29D: Suitable for large writing, say). I think GO TO PRISON wants to be NEWS, but it’s just as NEWS as INSANE. Hey, if you’re ARRESTED, are you CONVINCED? Is the prison sometimes called a “can”? Yes! “Canah: Prison or Jail.” Although now, I mostly think “toilet”. I hope you enjoyed this ARTY fare more than I did, at least in the US. I wish you a nice day, away from people who think it’s a “nice day” to make an April Fool’s joke. Oh, and also, lots of love and best wishes to all my friends who are participating in the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament this weekend in Stamford, CT. Hope to see you all at another tournament soon. Wow! Which Bible is in the Old Testament Crossword?
