Bryson Gray Letters To The Church – Stanley J. Grenz’s article, “What Is Sex For?” [June 12], in general, he sympathizes with the views taken from the recent Vatican document on respect for human life in its origin. But he seems to misunderstand the teachings of the Catholic Church. My wife and I are “past the age of childbearing,” but the church does not insist in any way that we should abstain from the act of marriage, and it does not teach that couples who want to be responsible for the principle of conception should give up this beautiful expression of marital love. It teaches that the meaning of procreation and the harmony of the act of marriage, according to God’s will, are inseparably connected and it is not necessary that the act of marriage be beautiful and holy and symbolizes the union between Christ and his church.

When a person’s life comes through the act of marriage, it is like a “gift” from God that crowns the act and gives it a permanent symbol. But when life comes out of it as a result of natural insemination, even when the sperm comes from a man, the child is the result of a process controlled and carried out by other people who are not their spouse. People should be “born” into the act of marital love, not “made” by technological processes.

Grenz’s opposition to the Roman Catholic position leads to the automatic rejection of the basis on which that position is based – “the inseparable connection… This basis is not only the Roman Catholic position, but the historical position of Christianity.”
