Cape In Massachusetts 3 Letters – The grasslands were scorched brown, and the rivers dried up. With the need for urgent action increasing, town officials are calling on residents to conserve water. Nearly three dozen brush fires have broken out in the past three weeks alone, the smell of smoke hanging in the air for miles.
Despite this week’s rain, which caused flooding in parts of southeastern Massachusetts, a prolonged drought has deepened across Massachusetts during a very hot summer, with much of the state now facing “critical” conditions, a category below the most severe. On Tuesday, the state’s Droughts Management Task Force recommended that Cape Cod receive that designation as well, urging residents and businesses to reduce water use and stop all unnecessary outdoor watering.

Vandana Rao, director of water policy for the state’s Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, told a task force meeting Tuesday that “the situation is clearly not good” but applauded the restrictions on outdoor irrigation that adopted throughout the state.

“The thing we want to keep repeating is that in other parts of the state where there is no public water supply system and people are on wells, even private wells, they have to use the same level of restraint, ” he said. “We just don’t want the wells to dry up or have other issues where they can’t access the water they need.”
In Boston, less than 4 inches of rain has been recorded since June 1, said Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. On average, the city receives about 9.5 inches of rain during that period.
Drought has caused serious problems for farmers, with potentially devastating effects on crop yields and fruit size. The state Department of Agricultural Resources recently announced that farmers in 12 counties will be eligible for emergency loans through the federal government.

Bone dry conditions allow brush fires to burn deep into the soil. David Celino, chief fire warden for the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation, said last week 35 fires burned 188 hectares of land. “That’s a lot for us in the middle of August,” he said.
In recent days, Governor Charlie Baker activated the National Guard to help fight a brush fire that has been burning in Rockport for several weeks, and a brush fire has broken out in the Georgetown-Rowley State Forest. On Sunday, DCR officials said the Breakheart Reservation, a popular trail system in Saugus, would be closed until Wednesday because of the fires.
Celino said it would take a “season-ending event,” such as a tropical storm that brings two or three inches of rain, to end the cycle.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Julia Blatt, executive director of the Massachusetts Rivers Alliance, showed photos of dry rivers to illustrate the dire situation.

As he showed the photos, Blatt explained how Cold River became “a drop” in Florida, a town in Berkshire County. The Ware River in Central Massachusetts is “just muck,” the Ipswich River is a series of “disconnected puddles,” and the Parker River in Georgetown is “completely dry.”
“We were sent videos showing people trying to paddle the Blackstone [River] and they had to keep getting their boats and pulling them,” he said. “It’s not really navigable.”
There is ample evidence that climate change is making droughts more frequent and severe, including in New England, according to NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency. Higher temperatures could speed up evaporation rates and leave the ground dry, meaning Massachusetts can expect more dry days in the future, even as the region sees more rain overall.
Jennifer Pederson, executive director of the Massachusetts Water Works Association, emphasized the importance of informing the public about the drought and local watering restrictions.

“If their water system is asking for restrictions, it’s really important for the public to follow those restrictions and make sure you pay attention to social media and signboards,” he said.
This week, Worcester announced it was tightening restrictions on reservoirs that had dropped to about 72 percent capacity. Under the new rules, irrigation systems cannot be used between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and city employees will contact hospitals, colleges, industrial facilities and large apartment complexes to determine how they can use less water, officials said.

Christopher: Until this trip, my understanding of the Upper Cape was “This is the part of the Cape by the canal with the bridge and all the traffic. I drive here to get to Chatham or Provincetown.” Worse: I didn’t know this part of the Cape was called the Upper Cape. It doesn’t make sense because of geography. Falmouth is lower, not higher. This is another Massachusetts mystery, like why would anyone name a place Belchertown?

Devra: This is where I went with the family when I was a kid, for our version of “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” For an actual vacation, full of adult fun (not that kind, Chris, get your mind out of the gutter where at some point in this series a candlepin bowling ball will surely land), I headed straight to Truro. Which is in the Outer Cape, a term that really makes sense with the location. By the end of our trip, my goal is for us to stop confusing the Upper and Lower Cape. I have no hope that we will ever memorize all the villages of Falmouth, however. I’m beginning to suspect that Cape Cod planners want to confuse outsiders in hopes of keeping the place to themselves. Haha, planners, joke’s on you.
Christopher and I have known each other for years — but you don’t really know someone until you’re with them, do you? I was pleased, but not surprised, to find our priorities perfectly aligned upon arrival. First stop: day drinking.
TREE HOUSE BREWERY: This bayside Sandwich outpost of the cultish Charlton-based brewery opened last year, and it’s a real good place. You make an online reservation for a specific time slot; when you arrive, they give you a wristband and drink tickets (limit three), and you choose from what’s on tap that day. You can also buy beer to go. Devra started with Haze, a Double IPA, then moved on to a very aromatic tipple, King Creamsicle. Christopher pulls up an Adirondack chair and concocts the Airmail, a canned cocktail that combines “honey and rum with crisp acidity and velvety effervescence.” The scene is tipily friendly but not rowdy, with lots of kids and people asking strangers to take their picture. We had the pleasure of witnessing the most awkward pickup attempt of all time.
After so much sun and velvety effervescence, it’s time for dinner at Woods Hole. Here’s a helpful hint for those of you (meaning us) unfamiliar with the Upper Cape: It’s bigger than it looks. At least that was the reason we were late for dinner.
