THEME: “THE SECRET” ??? (66A: When revealed in this puzzle, it reverses the meaning of the answers to the starred clues)— for the appropriate Across clues to be correct, the circled squares must be empty, while for Downs they must be filled in— and to fill it turns the Across indicator into its inverse. Also, the circled squares themselves are spelled secrets:

Word of the day: ASMARA(10D: Capital of Eritrea) — Asmara( /æ s ˈm ɑːr ə / əs-MAHR -ə), or Asmera, is the capital and most populous city of Eritrea, in the central region of the country. It sits at an elevation of 2,325 meters (7,628 ft), making it the sixth highest capital city in the world in terms of height. The city is located at the tip of a escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Eritrean highlands and the Great Rift Valley in neighboring Ethiopia. In 2017, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved modernist architecture. The site of Asmera was first built in 800 BC. with a population ranging from 100 to 1000. The city was then founded in the 12th century AD. after four separate villages united to live peacefully together after a long conflict. Under Italian rule, the city of Asmara was made the capital of Eritrea in the last years of the 19th century. (wikipedia)

SECRET has nothing to do with “reverse,” so … I’m just stunned at how irrelevant the secret is. The main idea of the puzzle is not the SECRET. The main idea is that the circled squares invert (*invert*) the meaning of the term Across and turn it into its *opposite* … so if you’re going to have an official one, there should be something that conveys that. SECRET says nothing. It’s too generic and ridiculous and frankly completely useless. Exotic. You don’t need it at all. I finished this puzzle and didn’t even notice it *was* more official. I saw that the letters in a circle were a secret and I thought, “Well, that’s interesting, but it has nothing to do with the actual trick, weird.” And *then* I saw that it was more public, which just seemed silly and unnecessary. I mean, you must have seen what was going on with the theme before you got down there, so secretly, at that point, would be a. wrong and b. completely anti-climactic. There’s no punch in the reveal, and there’s especially no punch in the *repeated* secret in the circular squares. Actually, there was never much of a secret, since the down crosses give you those fields. You can see the trick pretty quickly. I’m actually surprised at how weakly revealing / spelling the SECRET thing is. If REVERSE had been more public … maybe you have something. Or RESISTANCE. I do not know. Something. SECRET … what a waste. Another example of a technical / architectural feat done for its own sake, without worrying about whether the idea behind it all actually makes sense. SECRET … wow … still shaking my head that I saw the revealer so late and that all it did was repeat the world I already saw within the circular letters and that word was (still) in denial. a way that specifically relates to the actual thematic concept (which again means a reversal, not a secret).

Do people use DHL? I believe it exists because I do crossword puzzles, but I want to call it DSL every time (oh, also: do people use DSL?). YODELLED with two “L’s” looks nutty. If LEVELER has one “L” then YODELED should be spelled that way, and yes, my spell checker likes the one-L version and hates the two-L so what’s really going on there? Are we top in the UK? Yodel(l)ing while British. Isn’t the double L spelling typically a British thing? The extra ‘L makes me want to pronounce it with three syllables, the same way ‘learned’ can be pronounced with two.

I know the title “Heather Has Two Mommies” but LESLEA, no, that slipped out of my brain (44A: Newman who wrote “Heather Has Two Mommies”). Talk about a word list name – all those vowels! Speaking of glossary names: REAL ALE (29A: Unfiltered and unpasteurized brew) . This post is just an excuse to get a bunch of 1 dot Scrabble letters into the grid to act like glue and help you hold the grid together. I’ve never heard of REAL ALE, the same way I’ve never heard of SHAM ALE. SHAM ALE for my real friends, REAL ALE ale for my virtual friends! (and LESLEA, probably). I forgot ASMARA again today, but remembered it after a few crosses, so I give myself a “C” on my ASMARA recall test. A big “D’oh!” moment with CAROLE King. You got me there, hint (26D: King of pop). Good. I also wrote in TIRE (of “E”) for 49A: It’s spinning a lot on the highway (AXLE). Probably not a good idea to put USER (NAME) and USED (CDS) *and* (!!?) UNUSED in the same puzzle. That’s just lazy/negligence. I need coffee now. Looking forward to the puzzle tomorrow! See you there! Mwah!Super hoppy craft brew / WEDNESDAY 21.7.21

THEME: Double “Z” (!?)— looks like there are four answers containing a double Z word, and then this weird thing in the middle where two single “Z’s” are unmarked (ie no crosses), each of which appears to be located in one of the corners of a large black-square “Z” formation, although I’m not sure it’s actually a “Z” (more below). It’s basically a themeless word count with some “ZZ” answers and some “Z”-like building material in the middle:

Word of the Day: BARRELHOUSE JAZZ(17A) — Definition of barrelhouse 1: a cheap drinking and casual dance venue 2: a strict, unrestrained and powerful rhythmic style of jazz or blues (merriam-webster.com)

Neither fish nor bird. Between and between. A hybrid of something-or-other. Felt like a cheap stealth theme. There are honestly just a few stacked 15’s where those 15 contain ‘ZZ, but honestly, if you have a big word list, your software can find answers like that very easily and you can just try them and it’s not hard to stack only two 15s and none of the words containing “ZZ” are particularly interesting (JAZZ? PIZZA?). So you have an oddly “ZZ”-limited themeless puzzle, pretty much, with a high word count (unlike the usual Fri/Pool themeless, which need 72 answers or less), so we have to put up with a lot of not-so-short filler.
