DePaul University values ongoing relationships with retired faculty and staff, as it values their contribution to the university’s mission. The Emeritus Society of DePaul University was founded in 2008 as a merger of the Society of Emeritus Employees and the Association of Emeritus Faculty. The Society is sponsored by the University’s Office of Mission and Values.

The purpose of the DePaul Emeritus Society is to provide a means of continued connection, communication, and fellowship between the university and its faculty and staff, as well as among individual retirees whose professional lives have been devoted to the service of the university. The new Center for Arts and Letters opened in January 2012 on the Lincoln Park campus. At lunch on May 18, we will have the opportunity to hear about the building from Susan Solway, Director of Art History and Architecture. Additionally, he will lead a tour of the building after lunch.

This new four-story building brings 47 state-of-the-art classrooms and computer labs for math and science to the Lincoln Park campus. The 119,000,000 square foot building features an interior staircase that overlooks a unique, four-story atrium. Light-filled domes around the atrium on each of the four floors will host lounges and study areas, while a stained glass statue of St. Vincent de Paul, the university’s patron, overlooks the main entrance.

This multi-purpose area is located near the academic halls and enhances the student experience by providing an active and cultivated space.

Due to the pedestrian traffic created by the building and its location on the DePaul Campus, this popular space is a great and efficient outdoor space – a converted space that once had little space for outdoor use. The main purpose of this park-like campus is a trellis structure that provides shade, a canopy, and a pedestrian walkway for this space – as it is adjacent to a new four-story building.

The entrance to this area is made of brick and brick, reminiscent of the building materials and the main DePaul campus. The use of wooden tables and piers provides a well-defined space for pedestrians while reducing the boundaries of the area, and the potential for damage.
