Word of the Day: THE SPIDER ANANSI(16A: Mischievous Character in West African Folklore) — Anansi( /ə ˈn ɑː n s i / ə-NAHN -se; literally translates to spider) is a character from Akan folklore. He often takes the form of a spider and is sometimes considered a god with all knowledge of stories. Taking on the role of trickster, he is also one of the most important characters in West African, African American and Caribbean folklore. These spider stories originated in West Africa and were transmitted to the Caribbean through the transatlantic slave trade. Anansi is best known for his ability to outwit and triumph over more powerful opponents through his use of cunning, creativity, and wit. Despite taking on the role of trickster, Anansi’s actions and parables often carry him as the protagonist due to his ability to transform his apparent weaknesses into virtues. He is among several West African tricksters including Br’er Rabbit and Leuk Rabbit. (Wikipedia)

Triple (and sometimes quadruple) stacks like the ones you see at the top and bottom of today’s grids have generally improved in quality over the years as the vocabularies people use in their design software have become more and more robust. Still, for the most part, in my experience, even now, even today, the juice isn’t really worth the squeeze. The answers in the stack really have to be mind-blowingly good for the accompanying trade-offs in the shorter fill to be worth it. Today’s puzzle goes well I think, but after ANANSI THE SPIDER (really original) the rest feels pretty ho-hum. I prefer that designers work on creating a puzzle that is fun to solve rather than setting an architectural challenge for themselves. I think today’s triple stack grid was a good example of the form, but there’s kind of a joy ceiling on these things, as there are too many shorter/medium answers that are there just to make the *stacks* work, not because someone particularly wants them there. My opening gambit will give you an idea of the type of stuffing I’m talking about:

Rex Parker Does The Nyt Crossword Puzzle: Thrill Seeker’s Acronymic Motto / Wed 4 27 22 / One Inclined To Go In And Out / County North Of Firth Of Forth / It May Lead

To be fair, these first two answers (ÉTÉS, ANOUT ) are among the least interesting of the grid, but my point about not enough stuff really being *marker stuff* stands. Fifteen Downs up top and ADELAIDE is the only one I’d say is really delightful (and even that could be entirely personal, as everything Antipodean reminds me of my New Zealand wife, and “ADELAIDE” is a beautiful song by Paul Kelly, an artist who my wife introduced me to). ODAMAE and OATEN and the redundant ELMTREE give a similar meh vibe to the Downs below.

I have smileys next to THE NAM MACHINE and SILENT TREATMENT , so those answers were worth it, but any answer that includes ONE’S in a stack of 15s always seems boring and cliche to me; back in the day, when triple and quad stacks were somewhat more common, ONE’S answer became something of a cliché, a routine crutch that constructors often used, creating an awkward phrase that no one would ever use *unless* they were trying to pull off a stack of long answers. The paradigmatic example of the form is A LOT ON A PLATE (15). You used to see it… a lot. Well, not much, but it was definitely repeated, and 15-year-olds really shouldn’t repeat to the point of drawing attention to themselves. Anyway, “Feast your eyes on…” is a phrase; “HOLD ON” has possibly never been uttered before in the history of human existence, even though it is theoretically possible and grammatically defensible (despite the fact that this is how the phrase actually appears in dictionaries). This ultimately means that the 15s in this are both hit and miss. The rest of the stuffing hangs in there, but I’d like stuffing to do more than that on a Saturday (or any day). So this isn’t a bad puzzle, by any means – there’s hardly anything at all that made me wince or give the puzzle questionable glances. It’s just flatter than a themeless should be. Soda that has been sitting out too long. Actually, lukewarm coffee is probably the better metaphor for me. Yes, I *definitely* will drink it, but only because I’m too lazy to get up and go to the microwave. [Grinds] … Yeah, better than *no* coffee, but all I can think about is how good hot, fresh coffee is. Today’s puzzle from Cox & Rathvon couldn’t put up much of a fight. Only a couple of clues in the southwest quadrant put up some token resistance before falling.

Alec Baldwin[7] is an American actor, producer and comedian. A member of the Baldwin family, he is the oldest of the four Baldwin brothers, all actors.

While there’s certainly no Charlie Sheen, Baldwin has been known to get wild on the rare occasion — though there’s virtually no evidence that alcohol was in any way involved in these incidents.

In October 1995, Baldwin allegedly assaulted a photographer for filming his wife Kim Basinger and their three-day-old daughter. The couple were returning from the hospital and were confronted by the photographer outside their home in Los Angeles.

In December 2011, Baldwin was on an American Airlines flight at Los Angeles International Airport, playing a game on his phone while waiting for takeoff. When the flight attendant was told to put the “electronic device” away, he reportedly became belligerent and was eventually removed from the plane.
