Word of the Day: LHASA(1A: the capital of a Chinese province more than two miles above sea level) — Lhasa(/ˈ l ɑː s ə / ; Lhasa Lhasa:/l̥ɛː˥˥.sa˥˥/ ; Standard Tibetan: ལྷ་ས “Place gods”) is the urban center of Lhasa prefecture and the administrative capital of Tibet. The inner city area of Lhasa corresponds to the administrative boundaries of Chengguan District (simplified Chinese: 城关区 ; traditional Chinese: 城关区 ; 城关区 ; ; pinyin: Chéngguān Qu), which is part of the wider Lhasa City Prefecture. Lhasa is the second most populous urban area on the Tibetan Plateau after Sindan, at an altitude of 3,656 meters (11,990 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. The city has been the religious and administrative capital of Tibet since the mid-17th century. It contains many culturally important Tibetan Buddhist sites such as Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Norbulingka Palace. (wikipedia)
Finding LHASA as a “provincial capital of China” feels aggressively political and kind of hostile. I struggled with this clue a long time ago and wondered what the hell this town could be, only to find out that it’s the town that always ends up in crossword puzzles. It’s just that this is the first time (actually going back to 1944) that LHASA has been recognized as part of China. The word “China” or “Chinese” appeared in LHASA’s zero precision earlier today. The preferred and still accurate term for the location of LHASA is “Tibet”. I want a “Free Tibet!” I don’t want to enter. Here’s the thing, but yes, there is a well-known ongoing debate about Tibet’s political status, and it’s amazing to see that NYTXW has decided to officially recognize Chinese sovereignty after 75+ years of neutrality on the issue. Yes, the Tibet Autonomous Region is in China, but many Tibetans and others see China as an occupying power. If you just stuck to welcoming LHASA as Tibetan, you wouldn’t have caused any of this controversy. I don’t understand this advice at all (and in 1-In all places). Here is a brief profile of Tibet from the BBC, just for historical context.
As for the theme, it was working until it wasn’t. Four of the themes are understandable, but IN THE GIRL makes no sense to a baseball player (“dude,” yes, IN THE DUPLICATE, no) and I’m waiting for a complete wash, because it changes roles. , that is, you should have said this *to* the “server* – the server is the one that is “waiting”, not you. Also, a lot of crosswords (CAEN, IRES (!!!?), AGUE ZEROG – INES OHARA goes on and on) and not so much like it. No need to go to Gone With the Wind for O’HARA btw unless you just enjoy romanticizing the antebellum south. Both of my main struggles today were geographic. LHASA confused me up front, and then KIGALI, which seems to have completely disappeared from my brain. Not a global capital that I have ever put on permanent file in my memory stores. I had a TIE TACK CLIP before (48A: A small haberdashery purchase) and needed everything. to get CPA (64D: Figurehead?). Seriously, I had -PA and had no idea (“hmm, is this an IPA? … the beer has a “head” … no, the IPA is already on the grid. .. hmm” etc.).

Oops, “Play HOB”, what’s that? (22A: Play with ___ (make trouble)). Got HO- and then my brain kind of knew it was a “B” but my shadow brain was like “that’s ridiculous, how do you know that?” Try using this phrase today. I guarantee that no one will understand you. So, in the end, 2/3 of the timers work, and the network is filled with a not-so-great, but passable path. I’ve had worse Wednesdays.
P.S. I thought I would share with you this email I received yesterday. Word of the day: NYALA (39D: Spiral antelope) – sexual dimorphism! The lowland nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) is a spiral-shaped antelope of southern Africa (not to be confused with the endangered mountain nyala in the Bale region of Ethiopia). It is a species of the family Bovidae and the genus Nyala, which is also considered in the genus Tragelaphus. It was first described in 1849 by Georges Frans Angas. Body length is 135–195 cm (53–77 in) and weight is 55–140 kg (121–309 lb). The coat is dark brown or tawny in females and juveniles, but dark brown or slate gray in older males, often tinged with blue. Young females and males have ten or more white stripes on their sides. Only males have horns, 60–83 cm (24–33 in) long and yellow-tipped. It shows the highest sexual dimorphism among spiral antelopes. […] Nyala range includes Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was introduced to Botswana and Namibia and reintroduced to Eswatini, where it has been extinct since the 1950s. Its population is stable and it is listed as least threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The main threats to these species are poaching and habitat loss due to human settlement. (wikipedia) (my influence)
Here’s a big difference between the quality of the theme idea (great!) and the quality of the overall puzzle (less great). As with Monday’s puzzle, I felt my confidence flag very quickly after encountering a very short load that felt very yesterday, especially the partial name ENLAI that always appeared on the nets when people didn’t do this software. have to help them and also not
