In this post, you’ll learn what a double stop for violin is, the top 5 benefits of using double stops, and you’ll be able to download a free double stop PDF printable for beginner-advanced violin.
Double stops on the violin are when two notes are played simultaneously and are part of what makes the violin repertoire so exciting, elegant and sublime. See the image below for an example of how this would appear in a score.
The term “double stop” is a bit of a misnomer and can be confusing because nothing actually stops in the verb sense of the word stop (ie to stop or end). The term double stop makes more sense when we think of “stop” as a noun referring to a place such as a bus stop. For violinists, placement refers to the pitches on the fingerboard.
Disney Songs: Violin Solo
When a request for more double material from the M4YV project arrived in my inbox, I immediately said YES because I loved this aspect of violin playing. I love double stops so much they are one of the reasons I play violin!
Double stops are not difficult, but they are different from playing on a single string. For some of the players here, this will be new technology, making this the perfect time to remind us that new isn’t as hard, but without the right mindset, new can be interpreted as hard.
Double stops help to hear pitches in relation to each other, and this process leads to better intonation because the gap is more noticeable to the ear.
Double stops require the use of “block fingering” where two fingers are placed on the fingerboard simultaneously. Block fingers are more complex than using one finger at a time and help develop skills.

Double stops reinforce the understanding of whole and half steps because when you use block fingering, your fingers will find the ratios of whole and half steps in relation to each other.
In the same way that double stops require the left hand to use two fingers at once, the right hand also needs to double its playing demands by refining its control over two strings simultaneously. When we start playing the violin, we concentrate on playing only one string at a time. When we start learning double stops, we focus on playing two strings together with control and precision.
The most magnificent repertoire composed for violin uses double stops, including but not limited to: J.S. Bach’s 6 sonatas and parts for solo violin, concert cadenzas and mesmerizing violin playing. Check out the videos below for some amazing examples of double stops on violin repertoire.
I removed the pitches from 3 popular holiday pieces and left the beats for my students to solve the mystery of which pieces they are. They’re a really fun way to enforce rhythm reading, celebrate the holiday season, and keep lessons and group sessions fresh with new ways to learn. The 3 parts are Jingle Bells, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer & Ode to Joy.

Also here on the M4YV FREEBIES page are some additions to Holiday Joy! collections for violin and viola. First up is Ding, Dong Merrily on High. I love this piece and forgot to include this melodic version in the recently revised Holiday Joy! sheet music. My mistake is your gain because it’s now available here for everyone on the FREEBIES page.
Next is a contemporary arrangement of The First Noel for 3 violins. When I reviewed the collection of holiday music and Christmas music, I hesitated to include this trio arrangement of the first Noel in it. I enjoy the higher range presented in the top line and the somewhat modern interpretation of the harmony, but it doesn’t match the rest of the collection’s arrangements. I decided to keep it and offer it here and get your feedback – feel free to let me know how it works for you (here’s my email). A version of just The First Noel song is available in Holiday Joy! collection
Hello and warm wishes to you all for the holidays. I hope music is part of what helps you express your love and connection during the holidays. There’s no shortage of ways or places to celebrate your love of music with the world, and here are four ideas: 1- Learn Jingle Bell rock by ear with this slow video tutorial. 2-Download a FREE Jingle Bells duet (it’s a pretty fun arrangement with my favorite thing in the world – double stops!) 3-Get even more hearty holiday and Christmas music with 50% off Holiday Joy! collection 4-For the youngest musicians, click here to learn a neat little trick to make the instrument more festive.
If I had a magic wand and could give you all the gift I really want to share with everyone reading this, it would be an event that brought us together for a *huge play with holiday music with plenty of time to get to know each other and eat cookies.
Take My Life, And Let It Be
It’s impossible for me to plan right now, BUT I can share some of my favorite festival tunes with you so you can play music and of course eat cookies. Please enjoy the free download of Jingle Bells Sheet Music for Violin: Duet Edition and LARGE Print with Fingering for Beginners Edition. These are now posted on my FREEBIES page.
So, please head over to the M4YV FREEBIES page to download Holiday JOY’s Jingle Bells duet! collection I made a slight change to this from the original version so you may want to re-download if you got the original arrangement 2+ years ago. I created this duet for my studio and it’s designed to have the majority of players playing the melody so the accompaniment might sound a bit overwhelming with just 2 players.
Also on the FREEBIES page is a LARGE print version of Jingle Bells for beginners. This can be found in the LARGE Print Music for Beginning Violin collection. The expanded format is perfect for any musician new to reading music as it makes it much more accessible.
BONUS – Both of these collections are on sale at 50% off through the end of the month.
Dragon Slayer By Rob Grice| J.w. Pepper Sheet Music
“The sound of over 4,000 violinists playing in harmony was like nothing I have ever experienced and it was made even more incredible to think that the last time anyone heard such a sound was more than 80 years ago, when the last record was set at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1925.”
Download this sample of 7 Bowing Studies in the Keys of A, D & G Major from the FREEBIES page for a limited time.
I have a young student who plays with a passionate and focused tone and is very dedicated to practice. She is doing very well, but after years of teaching she still struggles to perform the down and up bow correctly. Doing reviews to fix this issue is counterproductive as she has embedded the wrong arc pattern into her old repertoire. Doing the same measure 20x a day would help but doesn’t create a compelling mission and she would probably zone out and start playing wrong tendencies again.
In an attempt to help the master down and up the bow, I created 7 beginner violin bow lessons in the keys of A, D & G major. Since the focus of these studies is bending, they are
