Love Story’ Stars Touring In ‘love Letters’

More than 45 years ago, Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal brought tears to the world’s cinemas as the doomed couple in Love Story.

The 2014 Broadway version featured a revolving cast that included couples such as Brian Dennehy and Mia Farrow, and later Alan Alda and Candice Bergen.

When the Broadway show closed early, the producers decided to send it off with a couple whose names pretty much defined the word “love” for baby boomers. O’Neal and MacGraw, playing Harvard rich kid Oliver Barrett IV and working-class music student Jennie Cavalleri, made Love Story a must-see in the early 1970s. It is still on the short list of the most romantic movies of all time.

During an interview conducted via conference call (Malibu, Calif., O’Neal, MacGraw in Santa Fe, N.M.), the actors were able to almost erase the nearly half-century since they last appeared on screen together. Complimenting each other (she: “I’m the best with you”; he: O’Neal is “my gift”), the actors, in their mid-70s, say their off-screen love for each other hasn’t faded over time.

“We’ve seen a lot of each other over the years,” O’Neill said. “Almost every year we’re called to get together to christen a boat, do an interview, or give Arthur Hiller (the director of ‘Love Story’) an Oscar.”

It was in 2015, shortly after a photo shoot for The Hollywood Reporter, that the couple was asked by the producers of “Love Letters” to take the show on the road. “It didn’t take long for us to say, ‘Yes, please,'” MacGraw recalled.

O’Neill also battled cancer. In 2012, he was diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer, and although he reportedly now walks with a cane, he appears healthier than he did a decade ago.
