Pikes Peak is one of Colorado’s 54 four, mountains over 14,000 feet (4,267.2 m) above sea level. The mountain rises 8,000 ft (2,400 m) above downtown Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak is a designated National Historic Landmark. It consists of a pink granite formation called Pikes Peak granite. The color is due to the high amount of potassium feldspar.

It is thought that the granite was once magma that crystallized at least 20 miles (32 km) beneath the Earth’s surface, formed by a violent intrusion during the Precambrian period, about 1.05 billion years ago, during the Grville orogy. Through uplift, the thick rock moves through the earth’s crust and creates a dome-like rock, covered with less resistant rock. Years of erosion and weathering have removed the soil and rock leaving exposed rock.

The land on Peak Peak above the timber line (about 12,000 ft or 3,700 m) is classified as Cirque land. The foothills forests are often located on brownstone, sandy, peaty Catamount loam or Ivywild loam series.
