There is confusion and debate as to whether the /y/ /oo/ sound is a diphthong (2 vowels that make 2 sounds together, like oi/oy). It really doesn’t matter what it’s called as long as you’re teaching students how to read and write them correctly.

Most of these are vowel teams, so students should already know the open, silent e, and vowel team syllables. Students should also be able to find the base word because some of these rules apply to the base word even if it has a suffix.

Makes the long u sound (says its name), and this is one of the most common spellings for the long u sound. Some examples include

It can produce the sound /oo/ or /y/ /oo/. Students should understand how to divide words into syllables and know what open syllables are.

The u silent spelling scheme is also common, but much less common than you alone. This is usually in the middle of the base word. Examples include

. It can produce the sound /oo/ or /y/ /oo/. Of course, students must be convinced of the magic e syllable.

Spelling of the long u sound in the middle or at the end of the base word. This is another one that can make both long u sounds. Examples include

There are no real rules when u says /oo/ or /y/ /oo/. They both need to be taught clearly.

During this activity, students should be able to clearly hear the differences in the sounds. You can use a picture of a cat and a cow to help students get the pronunciation right, although most don’t need it.

When students pronounce the words and don’t know which sound to go with, tell them to try both and see which sound is correct.

Students should first break the word into syllables and try to eliminate some of the spelling options. For example, if they are trying to spell a word

Because this spelling option usually comes at the end of the base word. If they still ask, you can point out something like “that’s the end of the syllable, what do you think might be there?” Help them choose the correct spelling pattern.

You can also use a guideline approach where you choose one tutorial word for each spelling pattern to use as a reference. So for

Also, because there are multiple options, expect students to make mistakes sometimes, and tell them so! It’s okay for them to make mistakes, as long as it’s another valid spelling option and not something against the rules. With repeated exposure and practice, they will eventually internalize the correct pattern of spelling words.

Phoneme Grapheme Mapping – This is a great activity that really isolates the phonograms for students to practice. You can get Phonics & Spelling Through Grapheme Mapping and follow the long u lesson or use my long list of words to do the same thing using the sound boxes. See an example below.

Create short stories to help reinforce spelling patterns. – Group similar words and make a short story using them to help students remember them For example, with

SOS – If you don’t already know what Simultaneous Oral Spelling is, check out this post here. I love this multi-sensory spelling method for practicing spelling. And you can do it throughout the lesson or one at a time, making it really easy to use in any setting.

Dictation – This is another fantastic activity, but I would do it after you have spent some time as some students find it more difficult. Also, when dictating words, give students clues about the spelling, such as telling them it’s a vowel group or an open syllable. I often dictate words that all share the same spelling pattern to avoid these problems.

Sorting – Sorting is always a good idea when there are multiple spelling options. You can play matching games like memory, just sort them into piles/columns, or make any game that requires you to sort by a spelling pattern. It builds phonemic awareness, so it’s always a good activity for all students.

You can also sort by color-coding vowel commands or spelling patterns in words. I took the list from the SOS activity, then had the student highlight each vowel team in a specific color to visually show the groups.

In my set of Long U worksheets and activities, I included 3 different sorting activities for the long u sound.

Picture Cards – Create a visual graphic of trick words, homophones, and homographs. These picture clues really help students remember which pattern to use. I suggest you make these using index cards and keep them in a bag or box for reference. See the example below (it’s long, but you get the idea).

Games – Of course I always include games because it’s so easy to add a deck of cards to any game and make it educational! Use an easy-to-play board game where students take a card on their turn and add a task, such as reading a word aloud and putting it in order, or asking another player to spell it, or even something as simple as having them spell the word after reading it aloud. Or print out a teacher-made game from my Long U Word Work Kit.

I usually use the printable board game below (which you can get for free from my library by joining my email list). I made a long stack of u-word flashcards and played by having the students pick up a card and read it out loud, then take turns writing it down.

Digraphs are another area that many of my students struggle with. They either have difficulty pronouncing them, or they have difficulty perceiving the digraph as one sound and continue to verbalize both letter sounds when reading. Some students have a really hard time visualizing the digraphs as a single sound and will continue to sound out each letter…
