Knotwords Is A New Word And Logic Puzzle From Zach Gage

You may have seen the internet flooded with little green, white and yellow squares last week. They are from Wordle, a free once-a-day word puzzle where everyone is trying to guess the five letters of a word. I’ve been busy at it since Christmas – and you should be playing, too.

It is very simple. Wordle gives you a grid of squares, in which you write letters. You have six guesses to find the word. I personally like to start with what I call “the farts gambit”, and always use FARTS as my first word. It helps to find, or eliminate, common vowels and other familiar consonants.

If the letter in the word you write has a specific letter, it will be yellow. If it is the right letter in it

, turns green. Make your way to the end, and you will be given the opportunity to share your finished grid with any characters removed. Since everyone is playing the same picture, and there is only one per day, it is impossible to compare color grids with other players.

I have been playing Wordle daily and comparing results with friends every day for a few weeks now. I’m having a good time – although I admit I’m still not sure if Wordle is a good game or not.

There is luck involved, how many letters and positions you get with your first guess or any subsequent guesses. It doesn’t even reward having big words: it’s easy to have 4 letters right and you still have 4 or more words that win, at that time there is no way to say which is correct than just guessing and hoping you got it earlier. you are done with trials.

Yet it is undeniably compelling. No matter how much luck is involved, it feels good to form your imagination around each letter found. The fact that it can only be played once a day also increases the tension; I have not failed the puzzle and I want to continue my journey.

Not that there is any in-game recognition of the streak. Wordle is pretty barebones, played through a web page. No sign-in, no rewards, nothing that makes it “stick” other than the fun of it. Waffle is a free, browser-based word game with a puzzle every day and lots of green and yellow squares. Beyond that, it has some major differences from Wordle. You don’t need to write letters, there is only one.

Instead, Waffle gives you a grid of five overlapping words with all the letters available. Most of the letters are collected, and it is up to you to find the right words and spell them by alternating letters one by one using as few words as possible.

As Wordle did, the problem is not finding solutions. You have 15 swaps available to you, which in my experience is more than enough to paint the board green. Every Waffle can be solved in only 10 moves, however, and you get a star for every move you have left when the board is finished. I finished today’s Waffle in 11 steps and therefore got four stars.

Another wrinkle to keep in mind is related to yellow tiles. As usual, a yellow tile refers to a letter that is present in the word but is in the wrong place. If a yellow tile appears in the corner, then the letter may belong to one of the overlapping words.

Waffle therefore encourages you to see the entire board before making a move. Does the E belong to this or that word, and if I were to move it to find out, which letter could it really be interchanged with? It won’t tear noodles into action, but it’s a logical process that’s satisfying to follow.

I continue every day to play Wordle, Worldle, Werdle, Heardle, Whose Who?, Created, The Box Office Game, occasionally Quordle and Octordle and never Semantle.

I feel like, at this point, we’ve reached the limits of Wordlelikes, and all that’s out there are free, browser-based word and trivia games. This is perfect for me, who likes words and trivia games, and for free stuff that I can play anywhere. Thanks, Wordle, for making mini-crosswords cool.

The puzzles in Knotwords look a lot like crosswords, but gone is the list of text. Instead, the board is divided into sections and you are told exactly which characters must fit within each section. Your goal is to fit all the letters in as needed, while correctly spelling the words down and across.

At its most important, the board will give you the two closest to the two letter categories. One needs to contain the letters A and E, and the other needs to contain the letters S and R. Since these two parts form a horizontal line, together they need to form a word. So, in this case, you know that the letters go in the order E-A-R-S and not, say, A-E-S-R. Because the second is not a word, I checked.

Clear pictures become more complicated when the parts are not just two letters, but three, four or five, and they are cross-shaped which means that the letters are spread over two or more words. There are many nice bits of UI design that help keep it manageable as the puzzles grow, such as an on-screen keyboard that displays only the characters needed in the selected section.

How Word Lists Help — Or Hurt — Crossword Puzzles

Knotwords is the work of Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger. Gage regularly creates fun puzzle games, including twist on levels like chess and sudoku, several of which he developed with Sclesinger. Gage was also a designer on the spaceship-in-problem sim Tharsis.

Can I cheekily stretch out and say that Knotwords is Word-like, and lines up with my obsession with all browser-inspired word games? It has new pictures every day, but in some ways I think Knotwords has a little more in common with Wordle—it likes the format beyond the similarity of word usage.
