Is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis but haven’t read this, you’ve missed one of his core writings.

“Lewis’s satire is a Christian classic… [His] depiction of human nature is as on target as it was when the letters were first published in 1941.” Over the weekend, while looking for a new audiobook, I found The Screwtape Letters was one of the highest rated! I had a deal through Google for a free audiobook. And while still clinging to the 45 hour “It” novel, I remembered I had the book.

Here is a brief description of spark notes: In a short preface, C.S. says: Lewis that he discovered the bundle of Screwtape letters somewhere, but won’t say how he managed to come across them. Screwtape is a devil, he warns the reader, and the Screwtape version of events should therefore not be taken as truth. Then the letters begin. In them, Screwtape advises his nephew, Wormwood, on how to lure a British man known only as “the Patient” into sin and ultimately Hell. Wormwood is an inexperienced devil, and he went to a training college to prepare him to tempt humans into sin. However, Screwtape complains that this college has taught Wormwood nothing because of its incompetent principal, Slubgob. With the second letter, the readers learn that the patient converted to Christianity and started going to church. The patient is most likely in his mid-thirties and he lives with and cares for his elderly mother.
