A masterpiece of satire, this classic work has delighted and enlightened readers worldwide with its clever and ironic portrayal of human life and hardships from the perspective of Screwtape, a high-ranking assistant to “Our Father Below”. At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon charged with securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation—and triumph over it—ever written, offering insights on good vs. evil, repentance, grace, and more.

When You Fast: The Why And How Of Christian Self Discipline

“If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requirements for passing through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels.”

Is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis but haven’t read this, you’ve missed one of his core writings.

“Lewis’s satire is a Christian classic… [His] depiction of human nature is as on target as it was when the letters were first published in 1941.” Over the weekend, while looking for a new audiobook, I found The Screwtape Letters was one of the highest rated! I had a deal through Google for a free audiobook. And while still clinging to the 45 hour “It” novel, I remembered I had the book.

Here is a brief description of spark notes: In a short preface, C.S. says: Lewis that he discovered the bundle of Screwtape letters somewhere, but won’t say how he managed to come across them. Screwtape is a devil, he warns the reader, and the Screwtape version of events should therefore not be taken as truth. Then the letters begin. In them, Screwtape advises his nephew, Wormwood, on how to lure a British man known only as “the Patient” into sin and ultimately Hell. Wormwood is an inexperienced devil, and he went to a training college to prepare him to tempt humans into sin. However, Screwtape complains that this college has taught Wormwood nothing because of its incompetent principal, Slubgob. With the second letter, the readers learn that the patient converted to Christianity and started going to church. The patient is most likely in his mid-thirties and he lives with and cares for his elderly mother.

The Screwtape Letters (short 2014)

This quote stuck out to me when I started reading. It was written in Wormwood how to deal with a new Christian. How do you help create a distraction during worship or in the church building. He writes on Wormwood to cause the new Christian to focus on others so they can be distracted.

“All you have to do then is to keep the question out of your mind ‘If I, as I am, can consider myself to be in some sense a Christian, why should the various vices of those people in the next pew prove it that their religion is only hypocrisy and convention?”
