A giant crossword puzzle, spiky holiday carols and lots of good news as the year closes: a letter from the editor
As promised last year, this year’s edition of the giant holiday puzzle will be released before Christmas for families who have a tradition of working together for the holiday. This is the 2019 version.
This is a quick column this week. I have a long article that I published online and in print on Sunday about Mayor Frank Jackson, and I think you have limits on how much you want to read from me.
One Clue Crossword
As we approach the end of the year, here are some things to look for in the coming days.
Let’s start with a giant holiday crossword puzzle. As you may recall, we caused outrage last year by not releasing it until after Christmas, when many people built a family tradition around solving it. We fixed the bug by emailing out the puzzle to everyone who asked and promised we’d get it right this year. A puzzle created by Monica Zurowski will be published in The Plain Dealer on Sunday, Dec. 19, with answers a week later.
Another tradition is the editorial board holiday songs, where board members entertain the year’s newsmakers in poems they write to the tune of popular songs. Look for them on Friday, December 24, Christmas Eve. (Spoiler alert: “Oh, Pat Devine” has as many marquees as “Oh, Christmas Tree.”)
We also have a large collection of end-of-the-year stories to meet in the final weeks of the year on our website and in The Plain Dealer. Most of our staff take time off at the end of December to celebrate the holidays with friends and family, so we create a lot of content to share while they’re gone.

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words horizontally and vertically.
Next to the crossword puzzle will be a series of questions or clues related to the different rows or boxes of the crossword puzzle. The player reads a question or clue and tries to find a word that answers the question with the same number of letters as there are boxes in the corresponding crossword row or line.
Some words share letters, so they will need to be matched. Words can vary in length and complexity, as can clues.
The fantastic thing about crossword puzzles is that they are completely flexible for whatever age and reading level you need. You can use many words to create a challenging crossword puzzle for adults, or just a few words for younger children.
