Swagger Crossword Clue 5 Letters

Swagger Crossword Clue 5 Letters – A distinctly difficult Saturday time to solve and I don’t know if that’s due to the ergonomics of solving on a laptop on my lap or if you all just found it difficult. I didn’t think it was harder than a normal Friday, so I don’t understand.

I preferred to see JOSE appear as 32d. [Philippine National Hero ___ Rizal]. Not only do I have a bust of him outside my neighborhood Filipino Community Center, not only is there a memorial to him overlooking Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive, but my in-laws are Filipino, so of course I’ve known the name for decades. Read on if you don’t know his story.

ANIMAL / CROSSING was the distraction the world needed right when the pandemic hit. The franchise has been around for 21 years, but it was the pandemic that brought a new audience to the game and made it popular even in non-Nintendo circles.

There have been a few ANIMAL CROSSING themed puzzles over the past two years, all with a slightly different approach. In this case, the crossing entries are obviously not animals (according to their clues), but each entry is one letter less than the number of squares in the grid. It’s that missing letter that turns both intersection entries into animals. Then, when you enter all the missing letters, they together spell out another animal.

The clue for the revealer at 40a is [S 44-Across series Nintendo hints at the letters where the answers to the starred clues intersect (bonus: read these letters clockwise)].

It’s pretty impressive and a lot of fun for someone who is (still) a fan of the game (like me). It’s a simple topic, but it’s not entirely obvious at first. But once you get the hang of it, trying to find and identify the animals still led to fun surprises. Simple yet elegant.

I admit I felt a bit disappointed with the FROG bonus. I don’t know what I expected the passages to spell, but a random animal seemed a little odd. I think I wanted something more meta. Still, given such a tight topic, I’m not complaining.

Note that you can have a frog neighbor in the game, but you can also catch a frog with a fishing rod… which is a bit awkward. Best not to talk about it.

Since the topic entries are not placed symmetrically in the grid, the long answers are somewhat spread out. We have SPOILER, INGRAINED, UNWRAPS, MOMENTS and MEN’S SHOP (which I find a little weird). Not overly flashy, but solid enough.

This one could be titled something like “The Art of Wordplay”. The idea is simply familiar phrases that include the last name of a famous painter.

Tally is four men, one woman; three from America (including two from the USA), two from Europe. There could be more variety here.

I agree with the Incubator team that this is a challenging puzzle. It felt like a Friday NYT. The content is what I’ve come to expect from Incubator: fresh, current, less male-oriented than most major outlets. I enjoyed everything except for one gripe. DEGREE? really? It was unstoppable and the transitions were fair, but really?

What I didn’t know before I did this puzzle: that LIZZO said (or sang) that she would “never ever be your sidekick”. Of course it is.

Good morning everybody! Loved this puzzle with so many good long entries. My favorites (there were many…) were NAIL ART, PENDULUM, TIME SUCK, THE BIG EASY, LESSER EVIL, OREGON TRAIL, DUST BUNNIES, SAY CHEESE, and HOUSE WINE.

What It Takes To Climb The World’s Most Forbidding Cliffs

Some of the short filling may have been tricky – I only knew ESAU, CEL,  SAABS and TCM from doing crosswords.

I liked the theme answers themselves in this puzzle. As a fan of heist movies, I had a good laugh when it came to LAX SECURITY. I feel like I’ve seen FOOTIE PAJAMAS before, although maybe not as a theme, but I like it as such a silly term (I wonder how many people solve their morning puzzles in their FOOTIE PAJAMAS). However, I think this was also the most confusing topic. At first I thought it referred to European football/soccer, but when I googled it, I saw that Australian rules football, which is a hybrid of rugby and soccer, is spelled “soccer” and not -ie. Although this game looks a bit wild, so I absolutely recommend checking out this US team page if you want to learn more about the sport.

A baton or baton is a roughly cylindrical stick of wood, rubber, plastic, or metal that is carried by police officers, corrections personnel, security guards, and military personnel.

Here’s David Harris filling in for Rex today – and today’s puzzle appears to be Dan Caprera’s debut, so congratulations, it’s a full day of people you’ve never heard of!

I imagine opinions will be mixed on this one, between the “whimsical and different” camp and the “puzzles shouldn’t have homework” team. Personally, I think it works nicely enough – the premise is goofy and the clue really leans into it, which takes the puzzle over the line into “cute” territory. When I opened the grid knowing I was blogging and saw a special little icon in the corner, I actually freaked out a little – just my luck if there was something confusing or a grid that couldn’t be expressed in the app. Then when I started looking at the topic hints, which are long and not largely reproduced above, I saw that the topicers were going to be instructions, and I relaxed a bit. It’s nice that the design team will add small (mostly) aesthetic tweaks to certain puzzles, even for app solvers.

The downside is that the clues were so long and I knew the instructions would be a bit arbitrary, so I basically decided to start by ignoring the themes until they started to take shape. Looking back at them later, I see that the themes rhyme as part of the clue couplets, and that there are actually some hints that the answers might be less arbitrary, such as the instruction in 22A to “turn towards the dawn,” a hint of departure to the east. So the hints absolutely serve their purpose and thought went into them, not just dumb pirate talk. But looking at them initially, it seemed like a lot of work to break down and deal with. I’m relieved it didn’t end up being a connect-the-dots post-solution or other homework topic, but the topic definitely took a back seat for me until the end, which isn’t ideal. It seems perfectly fair that you’re not in love with it or find it charming, your mileage may vary.

And overall, kudos to Dan Caprera for a memorable puzzle with an unexpected theme and some clever construction — not too shabby for a constructor’s debut.

There is a bit of classic glue on the filler, such as the suffix ENE (13A: Acetyl suffix), the perennial IRAE (36A: “Dies ___” (anthem)), the partial NUEVA (63A: ___ York (largest city in Los Estados) Unidos)) and the usually deplorable SSS (67A: the sound of a flat tire). But considering the 60+ themed squares, it didn’t seem like much. I can see more of them if I go net fishing, but they were less present during the rescue, which interests me. Some of the clues caught me off guard as I wouldn’t normally consider ESME (12D: Salinger’s Heroine) a “heroine” per se given the story, ORB for (30D: Magic 8 Ball eg) I’m nervous it’s 8-Ball maybe really magic. DISCI (42D: Things hurled at the Olympics) as a plural would probably give a minor to moderate sideways glance. I also resisted entering TEAL (48A: Pond swimmer) as it took me a minute to remember that this is the term for a duck, so one is on me.

Balancing out some glue, there were definitely enough happy entries and cues, including some longer fill to help balance things out. I was kind of neutral about ENTENTES (38D: diplomatic arrangements) and MARQUISES (31D: French noblemen or noblewomen), but I liked a few other things:
