It may not have been the right decision, but it was the only one I knew how to make.
This beautifully crafted and slowly unfolding story was a heartbreaker and a half, and I didn’t mind one bit. Straddling two timelines sixty years apart, this captivating book was a mix of genres as equal parts women’s fiction, mystery and historical fiction. The plot was interesting, multi-layered, well-developed, and skillfully paced. I was captivated by these complex characters as well as Ms. Nunn’s smoothly rendered writing style, which was poignant, insightful, and hit all the feels. My attention and curiosity were well and truly captured but while my brain cells remained, my poor spine took abuse. But I would be happy to do it again and I hope it will be as soon as I can see that Ms. Nunn has an honorable list that I need to know.

Esther Durrant’s Lost Letters is at the heart of the love story. A love story that transcends generations and one that looks to the future. It starts with a shocking revelation and if one really thinks about it, it ends with one too. But overall the story is one of love, suffering and finding a way forward despite what has happened in the past.
There are three specific stories told in the book; one of a young mother who thinks she is going on holiday with her husband but he leaves her on a desert island with a doctor friend because he doesn’t know how to help her. To explain why they would share far too much of the plot but this is the kind of thing men could do with wives before women had any kind of rights. It was the kind of thing that was done before the world understood depression and its effects.
The second story is about a young woman researcher who doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long. She finds herself working on the coast of England researching scallops around a series of islands – some inhabited, some not. After a bad decision to go out on the water without checking the weather she is saved by shelter on one of the smaller islands. This means finding letters in a suitcase where she is asked to find clothes. The letters were addressed but never sent.
The final arc involves a young woman tending to her fallen grandmother. Her grandmother was a progressive woman in her day – she is famous as a housewife mountain climber. While she is recovering from her fall the two are working on her autobiography. But there is a big part of her story that her grandson doesn’t know.
The Forgotten Letters Of Esther Durrant: A Novel
I thought this was a very engaging book. I read it mostly in the car on a rather long drive. It made the time fly and I almost didn’t notice the miles passing by. It sure was a much better blah time. I was very involved in the life of the
