CS Lewis’ satire masterpiece on the latest temptations and techniques of hell and Heaven’s Answer. “CS Lewis is the ideal persuader for the semi-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian but find that his intellect interferes with him”. – New York Times book review

This Momentary Marriage: A Parable Of Permanence

What if hell was organized like a diabolical bureaucracy with managers and agents on the ground? Meet Berlicche, the senior management and uncle of Wormwood, a tempting field agent who has been assigned a human patient to protect for eternity. Hell does not share love, but Berlicche assumes the guidance and protection of her nephew.

In a series of letters Berlicche offers advice and concreteness to the young demon on the finer points of temptation, the weaknesses and weaknesses of human beings and the disaster of his patient who becomes a Christian. While this certainly complicates matters, the two hell beings won’t let it stop them.

From this very distorted perspective, C.S. Lewis delves into human nature, revealing some interesting and sometimes embarrassing trends. Touching everything from insomnia to the “absurdity” of God’s love for humanity, Berlicche imparts his wicked wisdom to Absinthe. Although the mirror he shows to humanity is warped and cracked, it is still painfully revealing. The wit and parody mask a very serious analysis of what makes human beings work; and by requiring the reader to reflect, he can teach each of us how to resist the temptations and discouragement of the enemy!

Although The Berlicchette Lettere is a novel about Christian morality, it is written from the point of view of the evildoers, the devils. It is important to understand why Lewis chooses to tell his story in this way and what are the advantages and limitations of his form.

Throughout the book, the devil Berlicche advises his grandson Wormwood on how to corrupt humans. In giving this advice, Berlicche makes observations on human nature and humanity’s potential for virtue. In…

In Berlicche’s first letter to Absinthe, he tells Absinthe that a devil’s goal should be to stop a human being from thinking. Through this advice from one devil to another, CS Lewis argues that if a person thinks critically and analytically about Christianity and religion in general, then that person will come to understand and embrace it. While this idea may seem simplistic, it is by no means the …

Try as he might, Berlicche cannot understand love. Consequently Berlicche cannot understand why God created humanity, why he wants human beings to be good, or why he wants to reward them in heaven for their virtue. Berlicche’s reasoning is impeccable, but the total misunderstanding of his love means that he will never be a Christian. Exploring Berlicche’s misunderstanding of this basic human (and divine) idea, Lewis builds his theory on what humans love, both …

Enslaved To The Pressure Of The Ordinary: What Screwtape Taught Me About My Covid Experience

At the beginning of The Screwtape Letters, Berlicche explains the challenges humans face in their lives. God created human beings to be deeply imperfect: they have imperfect knowledge of the world and of themselves, they are foolish and irrational, and often lack respect for God. Humanity’s imperfection, Berlicche argues, is a consequence of freedom of he.

In Christian theology, human beings are unique to the extent that they have free will. While free will is a notoriously difficult concept …

At many points in The Berlicche Lettere, Berlicche expresses his satisfaction with the modern European emphasis on fashion, change and “the new”. This is a sign, of course, that Lewis doesn’t like this emphasis at all.

At the time Lewis wrote Berlicche’s Letters, the intellectual history of Europe was (and still is) in the shadow of monumental 19th-century thinkers such as George Hegel, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Charles Darwin …
