We spoke to experts who pointed out that skiing is a relatively low-risk activity if proper precautions are taken.

New COVID changes at many resorts for the 2020-2021 ski season include requiring face coverings, physical distancing (including on chairlifts and gondolas), pre-booking lift tickets (often giving priority to pass holders), limiting lesson sizes, reducing Restaurant seating and more. Many resorts also limit capacity on the mountain, especially for peak dates.

Utah’s Ski Resorts Set New Record With 5.3m Skier Days Despite The Pandemic

Family-friendly Snowbasin, less than an hour north of Salt Lake City, offers big-mountain skiing on 3,000 acres with 106 trails and 11 lifts covering 3,000 vertical feet of terrain. Snowbasin has welcomed skiers since 1940 and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics in men’s and women’s downhill, combined, super-G and Paralympic races.

But it’s not just for experts: Snowbasin is an all-inclusive resort for all ability levels, and 50% of the trails are designated intermediate. Their three terrain parks are also geared towards beginners and intermediates.

Fifteen minutes away in Ogden Valley, Compass Rose Lodge is a true original, with an industrial-farmhouse style and private, on-site observatory. The look of the Lodge is steampunk-meets-barnyard, with wood, leather and steel furnishings harmonizing with art by local artists.

The Lodge’s 15 rooms range from a King Deluxe to a Twin Queen Bunk Room (with two twin beds cleverly placed over two queen beds). All have Beekman 1802 artisan bath products.

What To Do This Summer At Utah Ski Resorts

The First Lift coffee shop is on-site, and lodge guests also enjoy free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi and free parking. Ask about a star tour at the Huntsville Astronomical and Lunar Observatory (HALO), located in a silo adjacent to the main lodge. (Adjacent North Fork Park is a designated Dark Sky Park.) As its name suggests, Solitude Mountain is a peaceful place in the Grand Cottonwood Canyon. This low-key resort is a local favorite with 1,200 acres, nine lifts and 82 runs. The terrain is 50% beginner and intermediate, and 50% advanced/expert, with great options as well. Children four and under ski free.

The Inn at Solitude is a Bavarian-themed lodge with convenient ski-in/ski-out access on the edge of the small base village of Solitude. The atmosphere is more comfortable than elegant, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Guests have access to the heated outdoor pool and hot tub at Club Solitude, as well as the full-service Solitude Mountain Spa (only offering massages this year). St. Bernard’s Restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, and drinks are available in the library bar. The Inn also offers coin-operated laundry facilities and complimentary locker room access.

Guests can choose from 46 rooms, ranging from a 194-square-foot Deluxe Meng or a Standard Queen (with two queen beds) to the largest Double Queen with its own kitchenette. All rooms are equipped with a mini-fridge, and Wi-Fi is free. Request a mountain view and a balcony.

Snowbird is Alta’s neighbor in Little Cottonwood Canyon—in fact, you can ski from one to the other if you buy a joint pass—and both resorts benefit from the canyon’s abundant snow.

Snowbird offers excellent skiing and snowboarding for all abilities on its 2,500 acres, 14 lifts and 140 trails. In addition, Snowbird offers backcountry tours, heli-skiing, snowcat skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The resort also boasts the longest ski season in Utah, from November to May, weather permitting.

Cliff Lodge and Spa combines the amenities of a grand hotel with an easy ski-in/ski-out location at the base of the lifts. Although it may look like a rough concrete tower from the outside, The Cliff Lodge has recently undergone a $35 million renovation, and the interior decor is modern and updated.

There is a convenient ski rental and repair shop on site, and each room comes with free ski storage with a boot dryer. Guests can relax in the heated outdoor pool or three bathrooms on the third level, or another rooftop pool and hot tub at The Cliff Spa, which includes a yoga studio and fitness center. The Lodge offers a cafe (The Atrium) and two restaurants: The Aerie and SeventyOne.

The 514 rooms range from a 360-square-foot master bedroom with two queen beds to a 1,960-square-foot two-bedroom suite. All units have mini-fridges, coffee makers, and humidifiers.

Cons: Some reviewers complained of long elevator waits, and spa access is $30 per day for hotel guests.

Surrounded by protected wilderness in North Fork Canyon near Provo, Sundance offers 450 acres, 44 runs and five lifts, with night skiing also available Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Thrill seekers can also try the Winter Zip Tour, which covers 3,870 feet at speeds of 65 miles per hour. It is the third longest zipline in the country.

Sundance offers rooms and suites designed with rustic elegance, natural wood, stone and leather, with Native American accents. Rooms range from a 398-square-foot Standard Room to a 947-square-foot Loft Suite with a fireplace, full kitchen, sitting area and patio. Some other room configurations also include fireplaces, and be sure to request a mountain view. The resort also rents out a series of beautiful and architecturally distinctive mountain lodges, from two-bedroom cabins to seven-bedroom homes. Some also have a hot tub.

Dining options include the fast-casual Sundance Deli, the award-winning Tree Room, the farm-to-table Foundry Grill and the Sundance Food Truck. Room service is also available. Sundance’s restored 1890s Owl Bar was relocated from Thermopolis, Wyoming. Formerly known as the Rosewood Bar, it was a favorite of Butch Cassidy’s hole-in-the-wall gang.
