A silent o and spelling example is the most common way to spell the long o sound, so I’ll start there. Of course, students must be confident with the magic e syllable. These words are one syllable. A few examples of long o words are with silent e

In open syllables, the long o sound is represented by the letter o itself. They can be one syllable words, but more often they are two syllables or more. Examples include:

The oa spelling for a long o usually occurs at the beginning or middle of a one-syllable word. Examples include:

The ow spelling of long o usually appears at the end of one or less common two-syllable words. Examples include:

. This is the least common and can appear in compound words of the main word. I would teach them as a group because the words are so few and remind the students that they are rare and short one syllable words.

Vowel Teams Part 1

When you start teaching long o, you really need to focus on spelling generalizations, homophones, and homographs. Teach one spelling pattern, and once you’ve mastered one, you can add another. It is much easier to learn how to read them than to learn how to write them. Because they all sound the same and can appear in the same place, choosing the correct spelling pattern can be tricky.

Once students are familiar with all the long o spelling options and know the open syllables and silent e syllables, you can teach them the process of determining the way a word is spelled.

When students come across a word with a long o and they need to figure out which spelling pattern to choose, here are questions they can ask:

From there, they can go through the most popular options first. So it would be o_e or just o, then the vowel teams.

How To Teach Long U Words

If it’s a one-syllable word, they have to choose between o_e, a group of vowels, or just the less common version of o. Find out where the long o sound is. If it’s at the beginning, try oa. If it ends, try it.

If it’s more than one syllable, check if it’s an open o, in which case it’ll just be written as o.

This will take some practice, so try using the checklist below (it’s available in my free library) to go through a series of words with your students a few times, then ask them to do more on their own. This is the same process they will use with other long vowel sounds, so it’s a great skill for them.

Also, since there are many options, expect students to sometimes misunderstand and tell them this. It’s okay for them to make mistakes as long as it’s another valid spelling option and not something that doesn’t follow any rules. Through repeated exposure and practice, they will eventually model the correct spelling of words.

Picture Flashcards – Create visual graphics of compound words, homophones, and homographs. The cues in these pictures really help students remember which pattern to use. I suggest making these using flash cards and keeping them in a bag or box for reference. See an example below.

Sorting – Sorting is always a good idea when you have multiple spelling options. You can play matching games like memory, just sort them into piles/columns, or create any game that requires sorting by spelling. This builds phonics awareness, so it’s always a good activity for all students.

I include 3 different sorting activities for the long o sound in my Long O Worksheets & Activities collection.

Dictation – This is another fantastic activity but I would do it after you have spent some time on the long o as it is more challenging for the students. Also, when dictating words, give students a spelling clue, such as telling them it’s a vowel team or an open syllable.

Games – Of course, I always include games because it’s so easy to add a flashcard pack to any game and make it educational. Use an easy-to-play board game where students take turns picking up a card and adding a task, such as reading the word aloud and arranging it, or asking another player to spell it, or even something as simple as having them spell the word after reading it aloud. Or print out the teacher-made game along with some other games and activities from my Long O Word Work.

Constant Review – Remember to keep reviewing these spelling patterns once you’ve learned them so you don’t forget them. Using a sound wall is a great way to do this without requiring extra time.
