The version presented here is played in the key of G major. It’s a fairly easy key to play (a sharp – F# – although there are occasional diacritics along the way), and importantly, it can also be used for singing.

You’ll notice that the main melody of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is repeated three times with a rising pitch, but the basic melody shape is the same.
For each phrase, the first and second notes are spaced by a perfect fourth note (learn more about the song to help you understand note spacing).
This series of notes is fairly easy to play, but it’s worth noting that in this key, the third phrase begins with the black note of F#.
Below is a simple bass line for an ode using only one note. Most of the time, you only need to play one note (a dashed minimum (half note)) on each measure, except that four bars have a minimum (half note) followed by a quarter note (quarter note).

In the third version of We Wish You a Merry Christmas, I created some depth by adding a few extra notes to the right hand playing, always keeping the melody note as the highest note. The bass line remains the same, and you don’t have to play more than three notes in total at any one time—one or two with the right hand and one with the bass.
The final version of We Wish You A Merry Christmas uses a walking bass style for the left hand, adding a little more movement.
