Word of the Day: Bill AYERS (22A: Bill ___, famous Vietnam War activist) – William Charles Ayers (/ɛər z / ; born December 26, 1944) is an American elementary education theorist. During the 1960s, Ayers was a leader of the Weather Underground, an organization that opposed US involvement in the Vietnam War. He is known for his radical activism in the 1960s and his later work in educational reform, curriculum, and instruction. In 1969, Ayers co-founded the Weather Underground, a self-styled communist revolutionary group that sought to overthrow imperialism. The Weather Underground carried out a campaign of bombing public buildings (including police stations, the United States Capitol, and the Pentagon) during the 1960s and 1970s in response to US involvement in the Vietnam War. Ayers is a retired professor at the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who previously held the titles of Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar. During the 2008 US presidential campaign, controversy arose over his contacts with then-candidate Barack Obama. He is married to attorney and clinical law professor Bernardine Dorn, who was also a leader of the Weather Underground.

An interesting concept, but very unevenly designed and with a high level of thematic density, causing the grid to groan horribly under pressure. My first thought on this topic was “Why three letters?” and “Why *those* letters?” Things got less interesting when the answer for both was “no reason, completely arbitrary”, and when the last three themes (moving from west to east) had their three letters simply repeated in the same word instead of being strung in half. two (it’s a much more interesting/elegant way of doing things), well, it was pretty awesome. At the time, the revealer seemed like an afterthought—not surprising or clever enough to save the execution of the ho-hum theme. At least RISING RETREAT was difficult to work out, its three letters doubled in two words and disguised by not being doubled in sounds. The COVER VERSION was also an interesting choice here – it’s the same sound doubled, but each VER is in a separate word, so the duality doesn’t announce itself as much, and you probably need to get the crosses to figure it out. Whereas … MURMUR, BARBARA and TARTARE are very easy to spot because the repetitions are such distinct and obvious parts of those individual words/names (notably MURMUR, the cheapest repetition of all, and TARTARE, a close second). There is nothing creative about these last three topics. One might think that a three-letter repetition might have produced more interesting responses, where the repetition was more disguised and harder to detect.

Today the filling was particularly weak. It was so bad early on that I stopped to take a picture:

Note: I took the photo *before* the OCTANT filling (more unattractiveness). ATHOS is an old repeater, but if your filler around it is fresh and clean, an old repeater can be very tolerable. And yet … today … we got from AFOS right into a really nasty reduction. (ATTS ) (I like it better as a QB stat, but I like it best when it’s not in my grid at all) and then TROU , ugh, the “word” that confuses many solvers (especially young solvers) every once it comes up, because no one says it, except perhaps in some old-fashioned humorous way; I’ve never heard that except for the phrase “drop trou” which I’ve only heard in movies??? Not sure. And yet I see it in crosswords all the time (or…too often for my taste). So, ATHOS ATTS TROU . This is your opening gambit. And then TONTO!? LOL, nice with the tip I guess, but the thing about TONTO, however you take it, is that people still see the Lone Ranger’s sidekick causing all the racial trouble your new tip is trying to avoid. And there is OCTANT! ATOS ATTS TROU TONTO OCTANT. A whole series. At that point, I really wanted out. And things don’t get much better: REWON and REUSE. The vintage crossword horror that is ONERS. Some relatively harmless classics like AGORA, ALERO and OGEES. Quite a crust in everything. Some obvious scrabbling in the NE and SW corners, but those corners are so clipped that Q, J, and K can’t compromise anything. In fact, they are handled quite neatly.

Names today can cause anxiety, especially. as ALLY (hard) and DALY intersect. DALY is such an important name in politics that I suppose it would take care of any problems with ALLY, but then again, any letter can cause problems when you’re dealing with an unusual name like ALLY, which I couldn’t remember at all (Holden, Phoebe … that’s all, that’s all I have in the Catcher memory bank). I only know AYERS from all the Obama era “controversies”. AYERS is more commonly referred to as AYERS Rock (Australia), but this is a colonial term that is no longer used. It is now officially ULURU. Put this in your grid and smoke it (seriously, ULURU deserves grid time). 5 letter words ending with NERT: Most people are looking for 5 letter words a lot lately. Josh Wordle, a programmer who previously developed social experiments Place and The Button for Reddit, invented Wordle, a web-based word game released in October 2021. Players have six chances to guess a five-letter word; Feedback is provided in the form of colored tiles for each guess, indicating which letters are in the correct position and which are in other positions of the answer word. The mechanics are similar to those found in games like Mastermind, except that Wordle determines which letters in each guess are correct. Each day has a certain answer word that is the same for everyone.

Not me If the goal is to minimize guesswork, then I don’t like Wordle because after playing like everyone else for a month or so, I’ve started playing “Wordle Art” instead, meaning I’m not trying to solve the daily puzzle

. I usually use all six guesses to get an answer, though sometimes I use five if it fits the pattern I’m trying to create that day.

My guess distribution in Wordle is heavily weighted towards maximum guesses, and I like it that way.

You may be wondering how you can intentionally create a specific template in Wordle. The answer is quite simple: you just need to know the answer in advance, and then you can plan a series of words to create a pattern.
