Josh Wordle, a programmer who previously developed social experiences Place and The Button for Reddit, invented Wordle, a web-based word game released in October 2021. Players have six chances to guess a five-letter word; feedback is provided in the form of colored tiles for each guess, showing which letters are in the correct position and which are in other positions of the answer word. The mechanics are similar to those in games like Mastermind, except that Wordle determines which letters are correct in each guess. Each day has a special answer word that is the same for everyone.

Because this year we have faced conflict and tragedy on a scale never seen in the recent past. So, the Prime Minister’s words should reflect the mood of a nation that is slowly rising to its feet.
Historically, on Independence Day in the past, Prime Ministers spoke at length about various schemes launched by their governments, achievements, challenges and ways ahead.
I thought this would be a good opportunity to revisit the past, take a look at previous performances and perhaps predict how long the performance will last this year.

I’m reducing the code parts to the end of this post because (surprise, surprise) data visualization first!! You can find the entire project in my GitHub repository.
I looked at the PMO archives public website and downloaded the independence day speeches of the current and last 2 prime ministers till 1999. India has had the following Prime Ministers in the recent past —
A word of caution — these downloads are English translations of speeches spoken in Hindi at the time. Data preprocessing
In the end, I was left with a set of 21 speeches containing only the main content.

Over the last 21 years, the most frequently used words in Independence Day speeches were clearly “Country”, “Government”, “State”, “Today”, “India”, “World”, “Brother” and “Sister”. ‘.
It is interesting that these words have been used very often in the last few years by the current Prime Minister Shri. compared to Narendra Modi predecessors. On the other hand, ‘India’ has been mentioned equally (expectedly) by almost all the Prime Ministers.
Prime Minister in 5 years Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is popularly called the Real Statesman of Modern India, reflected this nickname in his speeches. It can be seen that words like “World”, “New”, “State”, “Nation” are often used in his speeches on the Independence Day.
The academician and economist prime minister who led India in 2004-2013 mentioned “Development”, “Education”, “Work” etc. in his speeches on Independence Day.
Independence Day Speeches: How Long Will It Be This Time?
The incumbent Prime Minister, recently re-elected for a second term, has in the past highlighted the benefits of the ‘Poor’, ‘Farmer’, ‘One’, ‘Cro’ and the Indian ‘Dream’ in his Independence Day speeches. .
Looking at the duration and text length of the speeches, it was surprising to see that Vajpayee’s speeches were the shortest in terms of duration and length, while Modi’s speeches were still the longest.
Over the past 21 years, the speeches have been getting longer and longer, and there has been a big jump since Modi’s election. In 2017, there was a noticeable decrease in speech length. According to this article, the Prime Minister had received letters complaining about his long speech the previous year (2016), prompting him to keep it crisp and short!
But that was only for that year, as the following two years saw the performances lengthen again.
Religious Emblems And Allegories
Having seen the length of speeches in the past, I thought of using a simple Auto-regressive (AR) model to predict this year’s speech length.
It seems to me that these Independence Day speeches are carefully written and directed and also look to history to ensure that events stay true to tradition (at least until 2013).
At most, this year’s speech length may depend on last year’s speech length (as evidenced by the anecdote I wrote earlier), and so a lag of 1 should be good enough for the AR model. Also, since this is a non-stationary time series, I differed it once to make it stationary before fitting the model.
To test this simple model, I trained and predicted speech lengths for consecutive years starting in 2010. Products for 2011-2019 are listed below.

So the model shows a big error when the new prime minister was elected in 2014 and his speech was longer than his predecessor! Since then, this simple model has proven wrong in 2017 and 2018 because — It’s just an auto-regressive model for God’s sake!! Predicting the next year’s value depends only on the previous year’s value.
Anyway, the model has an error of +- 23 minutes and this is the forecast for this year, 2020.
It seems that the Prime Minister can speak for a maximum of about 120 minutes and a minimum of about 70 minutes this Independence Day!
Update — The Prime Minister spoke for 86 minutes this year, which is within the prediction error! Code snippets
