Very good minus the “softcover” where the boards are bound with a metal comb. There is some general wear to the board: a mark left by the price tag, some spotting, a little bend to the front cover. The interior is unmarked and in very good condition.

Manage your privacy settings. In 1982 I attended a Calligraphy Conference in Philadelphia. I’m pretty sure this was the first workshop I went to and it was pretty overwhelming. I was filled with insecurity and very shy. I chose Sunday mornings with Jaki Svaren because I love his book Written Letters. The letters are accompanied by running commentary ranging from big ideas about letterforms, history and philosophy to detailed instructions on the formation of each letter. The voice is nice and clear: “Strive for equal white space between letters, but enjoy your humanity.”
The workshop is in what is called Jaki bone script which involves the manipulation of the pen. The calligraphy part is great but nothing compares to the philosophy expressed through words of wisdom and stories and especially the introduction to the book Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Shunryu Suzuki. Jaki urges us to take away the value judgment in reference to our letters. If we make a letter and think it’s good, it puts pressure on us when we make the next one. If we look at the letter we just did and say it’s bad, it reduces our confidence and flow and we don’t make the next one with the right attitude. Suzuki wrote: “Good and bad are only in your mind. Therefore, we should not say, ‘This is good,’ or ‘This is bad.’ Instead of saying bad, you should say, ‘No-no-no-do!'”
While in Philadelphia, I found a copy of the book in a bookstore. I think it’s fair to say that Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind changed my life. I try to go beyond taking always from the judgment of value and do not determine it is good or bad for other aspects of my life. I can’t say I’ve always been successful but it has made a difference. Another quote that is very true for me is: “There must be some encouragement, but encouragement is only encouragement. It is not the true purpose of practice. It is only medicine. When we are discouraged, we want some medicine. When we are encouraged, we do not need medicine. whatever. You shouldn’t think of medicine as food.” These words are my guide on my path as an artist. The understanding that validation for one’s work must come from within has deepened over the years. has not supported the old version of the web browser to ensure that user data remains safe.
