Abeka Letters And Sounds K5
Abeka Letters And Sounds K5 – If you’re a homeschooler, you’ve probably heard of A Beka. They are one of the oldest providers of homeschool programs and actually what I grew up using as a kid. The books are brilliant and incredibly comprehensive and fill me with a nostalgic sense of comfort. My first year of homeschooling I bought all the curriculum kits for all the little ones and couldn’t wait to get started. I’ve learned the hard way over the years that A Beka absolutely, positively does not work for our family (despite my love for it and desire to make it work) and thought I’d share it with of you who might be thinking about it. .
I was homeschooled almost until 11th grade (went to high school for the second quarter of 10th grade until graduation). For almost my entire homeschooling journey, I have used the A Beka curriculum. I remember when that huge box came in the mail (I had 3 brothers who were homeschooled at the same time) I was always most excited to open it. I can smell a new book, I loved the bright colors and pictures and the freshness of a new year. I loved having my own books and usually started on THAT DAY no matter what. Sometimes I worked through several books in a year, I loved that curriculum with every fiber of my being. It was fun, I loved the workbooks and it worked with me. My brilliant aunt is actually a writer and has written numerous books for A Beka, so when I say I love this curriculum, it comes from a deep sense of nostalgia, connections and beautiful memories.

Tried A Beka twice. Once when I first started (bought their entire preschool package) and again last year. I went and purchased all the curriculum sets, decided to give it another shot and now have books that are filled in about 2-3 weeks and otherwise completely blank. I just can’t bear to throw them away, but there’s no one to sell them to here. While I was reorganizing my schoolbooks and cleaning out what just wasn’t working for us (notice the AOP Lifepacs in there too?), I thought I’d lay it all out for you guys. Check out these four reasons why A Beka didn’t work for our family.

I literally didn’t make it a month into these books before I called them. One thing I’ve learned about homeschooling is that you have to be flexible, not get so caught up in what you want and expect. Yes, it was a lot of money, we still have readers, the rest is sitting in a closet in my basement. But the point here is that at first I had to do a bit of trial and error. I made mistakes. I bought curriculum (AOP life pacs are the same idea, total mistake) which was a recipe for disaster. And the more I learn about myself, the more I learn about my vision for homeschooling and what I want from it, the more I learn about my kids and how they learn… the better I get at finding a curriculum that works for all of us! (Yes it’s possible!).
If you struggle with your kids every day and feel like you’re losing the battle, have you considered that it might be the way you teach? The books you use? The method you use? We have created a 5 day course that is designed to help you identify your homeschooling vision and style and see if they align or not. Sometimes, like me, we need to change the way we teach because even though it comes naturally to us, it just doesn’t hit the mark! It will also help you learn your children’s personalities and learning styles so you can better tailor their education to them. But the best part? At the end, I will prepare a personalized curriculum recommendation based on my experience as a homeschooler, homeschool mom, and the results of your course. I’ll email you what I think might work for you and we can discuss them, ask questions, etc. to help you feel confident in what you’re using this year! This course is completely free! All you have to do is go here to sign up!
Choosing curriculum isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most important things we do as homeschool moms. The curriculum we use can make or break our entire year. If you already have your curriculum, run with it! Try, be open, try to make it work and find a way to make it work for you. But if you’ve put in the effort and it just takes all the joy out of homeschooling for your family, don’t be afraid to cut your losses! Be honest with yourself and your children, ask for their opinion! Take a 1 month evaluation, find out what THEY think about it! I am confident that the more we can look at curriculum as a tool and not something we are slaves to, the better our homeschool experience will be!
