Abstract: Vitrimers, powerful organic glass formers, are covalent networks capable of changing their topology through thermoactivated bond exchange reactions. At high temperatures, vitrimers can flow and behave like viscoelastic fluids. At high temperatures, vitrimers can flow and behave like viscoelastic fluids. At low temperatures, exchange reactions are very long and vitrimers behave as classical thermosets. The transition from liquid to solid is reversible and is actually a glass transition. By varying the catalyst content and nature, we can tune the rate of the transesterification reaction and show that the vitrimer glass transition temperature and transition width can be controlled at will in epoxy-based vitrimers. Illumination of the reaction mixture resulted in polymerization under 392 and 450 nm light, but not under 631 nm light. Sunlight was also a viable source of photoinduced ATRP. Control experiments show photoreduction of the CuII complex (excited-state charge transfer of the ligand to the metal) to yield a CuI complex and a bromine radical that can initiate polymerization. No photoactivation of the CuI complex was detected. This means that the ATRP mechanism in the presence of light is a hybrid of ICAR and ARGET ATRP. The hydrogel can automatically repair its damage under both acidic (pH 3 and 6) and basic (pH 9) conditions through acylhydrazone exchange or disulfide exchange reactions. However, at pH 7, the hydrogel is not self-healing because the two bonds are kinetically blocked, while the hydrogel acquires self-healing ability by accelerating acylhydrazone exchange with the help of catalytic aniline. All self-healing processes have been shown to be effective without external stimulus at room temperature in air. The hydrogel also exhibits unique reversible sol-gel transitions in response to both pH (HCl/triethylamine) and redox (DTT/H2O2) triggers. read more read less

The autonomous self-healing process can be fast for a mechanically strong PVA hydrogel that produces a high fracture stress. A study of the effect of hydrogel preparation conditions indicates that the cause of the phenomenon is hydrogen bonding between PVS chains across the interface of the cut surfaces. The key to effective self-healing is an appropriate balance between a high concentration of free hydroxyl groups in the PVA chains on the cut surfaces prior to contact with sufficient PVA chain mobility in the hydrogel. read more read less
