Theme: “HOLD MY BEER…” (60A: comments before stupid stunts…or hints at the end of 17-, 25-, 36- and 50-Across) – the last word in the topic answer is all. What beer can hold:

Themes (!) are pretty well maintained. Certainly the drummer is the most original and interesting thing on the grid. I was a little… disappointed? …it was empty when I got the open text and went to find the beer brand hidden in the themed answer. If I had read the revealer clues to the end (who has the time!?) you would have seen that I was looking for beer in the wrong place. After all, it’s almost impossible to hide an answer to a topic *in* a beer name. You can try it, but good luck with the list of the most popular beer names. Unlike beer brands, you can hide the type of beer. IPA and LAGER and not. LOL I just remembered that I had already done this myself while typing this sentence. I was seriously, genuinely laughing out loud, so I completely forgot the puzzles I had made and had to ponder the subject possibilities of other puzzles in order to reminisce. Wow. Anyway, my puzzle (co-created with Lena Webb) had the publisher BEER BELLY. And yes, it was really hard to find a themed answer that worked, let alone fit symmetrically to the grid.

Sorry for the memory lane bypass. Back to our puzzle, the theme works and the revelator is good. As the puzzle progresses, it’s nice to have the beer holders get bigger (top to bottom). My only problem is that the ACE PITCHER is a bit redundant and the SPACE CASE is… well, I really wanted it to be a SPACE CADET and (very) simply thought there was some kind of trick or reverse going on that could make CADET work somehow. However. example. I’ve definitely heard of SPACE CASE so that’s fine. And I actually like PORK BARREL a lot as a standalone answer, so I give the theme a thumbs up. The filling wasn’t terrible overall, but towards the end the grid was handled by the gridoture, causing a disastrous disaster that made you forget the good points about the rest of the puzzle. ECO has always been a bit of a headache. But the spread of the ECO prefix word is truly awful, and ECOTEUR pushes its limits. I don’t even believe in ECOTAGE in one word (unfortunately I’ve seen it on the grid). So how the heck do you expect me to buy on ECOTEUR? I challenge you to use the word in conversation. Even ecologically minded people will say, “Huh? What did you say? What is E-COUTURE?” “I said ECOTEUR, E-C-O-T-E-U-R.” “Ah, … like the literary type of writing about plants?” “no.” “Art director of a botanical film?” “No, the one who commits ECOTAGE.” “Oh, it’s like decoupage, but with tree leaves. Now I get it.” [/scene] Say SABOTEUR or SABOTAGE and no one will misunderstand you, replace SABO- with ECO- and everyone will misunderstand you. Put your ECOTEUR and ECOTAGE in ECOCAR and drive over the cliffs. But if it doesn’t go into the sea, it will be ECOTAGE.
