Word of the Day: SQUIB KICK(38A: Football strategy to prevent long returns) — A squib kick is a term used in American football to mean a short, low, line drive kickoff that usually bounces before flying to the ground. A member of the receiving team. Kicking the ball too short forces the receiving team’s slower players to retrieve the ball first instead of their faster kick returner. Second, it can be difficult for a team to catch a ball that bounces unpredictably, allowing more time for teammates to move downfield to surround the ball carrier. (Wikipedia)
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the secret to good themeless puzzles isn’t scrabble letters. In 2021, the fifteenth year of this blog’s existence, the idea of special sauce Qs and Zs and Js for Friday and Saturday puzzles still holds. This puzzle isn’t bad by any means, but it seems more interested in placing crooked letters than putting in a really interesting long fill and creating an overall enjoyable solving experience. It also seemed oddly dated. A little WIZEN ed. SNIPE HUNTs sounds weird and JOHNNY OLSON is gone and calling them TUSHES and TOGS sounds Nana-ish and it’s hard to imagine someone under 60 exclaiming “Party Down” which is a past tense verb (? ) Hyperlink is just… not a link . Am I currently on the World Wide Web? I don’t know. I found it a bit awkward because of the desire to display the scrabble tiles and the overall sensibility of the fill-in and cluing. IPOD is old and ASTANA is outdated etc. It’s a solid grid, this one, but not once did I smile or think, “Oh, cool.”

A big perceptual problem today is the hush (1D: response when someone taps the microphone, maybe). I assumed the “reaction” would be an exclamation of “Hush!,” because who wants to hear someone press the microphone … but that seemed like a very strange clue for such a reaction. It’s not like a mic tap + “Hush !” Some classic combo. So it was bugging me, that clue … until I realized it was *a* hush … it had to come across the room … when someone pressed the mic. Yes, that makes sense. The “reaction” part of the clue led me down the wrong path there. In addition to a major comprehension problem, I have a major parsing problem: SKI (space) tracks (31D: evidence of running). First of all, “gone” without a subject is a bit confusing. That is the ambiguity of “running”. But the thing that threw me the worst was that the first time I saw the clue was SKIT- in place. I made two mental mistakes: thinking it was the front part of a single word (skitches? skittles?) and then thinking it was related to skits. No and no. Even after figuring out it was something SKI, I couldn’t see what it was until I got a lot of crosses. Nothing else bothered me much today. 12D in SQUAD: Wrote in FLEET (RAPID), then AQABA next to it, which left me with a row of Qs at the cross, at which point I thought “Wow, double-Q word, this guy really likes Scrabble letters. But only one Q.” is. near a J. near Z 🙁
I know my favorite mistake is instantly wrong, but I still can’t stop my fingers from making:
This is the first “landscaping” thing that comes to mind. I thought “well, that’s unfortunate” and immediately thought “well, that’s wrong.” My proudest moment is remembering Astana. Seriously, that’s it, that one moment of “Is this it?!” And then it was confirmed by the cross. It’s rare that such trivia is actually ingrained in my brain, this late in the game (ie three+ decades into my solving career). But I don’t know what the *current* name of Kazakhstan’s capital is, but … I’ll look into it some time in the *next* thirty years. Take care, see you tomorrow.
*It’s Nur-Sultan, I want to be very puzzled now, as soon as possible so I have a good chance of remembering it. Thrill-seeker’s brief motto / WED 4-27-22 / A man inclined to go in and out / A county north of the Firth of Forth / A large retailer in camping gear / A Tuft & Needle competitor / A hairstyle that looks edible
