Music has been a part of religion for centuries because it is a beautiful way for people to worship together and enhance the religious experience. Centuries ago, Christianity used songs in Latin in services to complement songs in the vernacular. In the 19th century, the revival movement led to the development of new styles and genres, especially in the United States of America with gospel and spiritual music.

The genre was created out of a desire to combat the church’s stigma of being “boring” and “boring”, especially for young people. In Christ Alone is a song written by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty. Townend grew up in a Christian family in England and has produced albums for many of the UK’s most famous worship leaders throughout his career. Many of his compositions are now a staple in the repertoire of contemporary devotional songs. In Christ Alone was the first collaboration between Townend and Getty after they met at a church service in 2000. The couple completed the song in 2001, so it’s a very modern worship song. The melody has a very Irish style and the theme of the piece is focused on the life, death and resurrection of Christ.

When asked about the song, Getty said, “I wanted this song to become a hymn that expresses the whole life of Christ and what it means. Something that can lay the foundations of our belief in Christ, the God who changed all history and He wants to establish a relationship with each of us, to teach people.”

South African singer Adrienne Camp recorded her version of the song in 2002 with the Christian group Jeff Moore and the Distance.

Be Thou My Vision is a traditional Christian hymn that is very popular in the UK. However, the origins of this piece are incredibly obscure – the song dates back to the 5th century, but it survives and is still played today, a testament to the brilliance of the music and lyrics.

What we do know about this hymn is that it has Irish origins and is strongly associated with St. Patrick. The melody of this song was originally called Slane: it was written by an unknown writer as a tribute to Patrick. The story goes that in 433, a local king in Ireland forbade anyone from lighting a flame or candle at a pagan festival. Patrick disagreed, and in an act of protest, on the day of the festival, he climbed to the top of Slane Hill and lit a huge fire. Regarding the lyrics, many have attributed them to Dallán Forgaill, a 6th-century Irish poet.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that the melody and lyrics came together to create the song Be Thou My Vision as we know it today. In 1905, a young student found the original text and translated it into English for the first time. Then in 1912, an Irish woman named Eleanor Hall combined the lyrics with Slane’s melody to create the song Be Thou My Vision. After appearing in a hymn for the first time in 1919, the song celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019.

The origin of Abide With Me is also a bit murky: it was definitely written by the Scottish minister Henry Francis Light, but there are two stories about when it was written. The first story is that he wrote it in 1847 when he was sick and dying of tuberculosis. The second story is that he wrote it in 1820 following a visit to a sick friend who repeatedly used the phrase “abide with me.” This inspired Light to write a hymn that he then gave to his friend’s family.

The music of this hymn was written by William Henry Monk, a British organist and church musician. Monk’s three-year-old daughter had just passed away, and she was his inspiration for the melody, which he originally called Eventide. The music was set to Lyte’s text in the 1860s

Abide with Me is available for solo piano and is set at medium level. Don’t be fooled by the simple appearance of the music – although it consists mainly of crotchets and minims, the challenge is to sing the melody and avoid repetitive or wooden accompaniment.

Eagles represent freedom and power, and in Christianity are often used as symbols of the resurrection of Christ. The song On Eagle’s Wings is a little different: the eagle in this case is a symbol of God and the uplifting feeling he creates in the lives of his followers.

The chorus of this song is simple but builds slowly, almost like a metaphor of flying on eagle’s wings as the bird soars higher in the sky. Combined with the beautiful and uplifting lyrics, it’s not hard to see why so many people love this song.

Discover On Eagle’s Wings with: This devotional song is available for solo piano and is aimed at intermediate level pianists. A melody in the right hand is accompanied by a lower note in the same hand, so it’s important to make sure the higher note sings above the rest and doesn’t get lost in the music. Our last worship song is a hymn from 1887, Leaning on Eternal Arms. The lyrics were inspired by a biblical phrase from Deuteronomy 27:33:

Fur Elise In Ragtime

Anthony J. Showalter, who wrote the lyrics with Elisha Hoffman, was moved by letters from two former students who had lost their spouses, and used the above phrase when writing to offer condolences. Hoffman completed the text with Bend and Showalter’s renderings and then set it to music.

While the hymn has a very simple structure, there are various techniques in the text that are complex. For example, the use of epistrophe (repetition of the same word(s) at the end of consecutive phrases). If you look at the text of this devotional song, the word “reliance” is repeated several times in the chorus. This not only makes the words easy to remember, but also reinforces the song’s message: that you can rely on God for support when times are tough.

This soothing song has universal appeal and has been covered by many artists in many different styles. For example, American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson sang it and added a gospel twist to it. Folk singer Iris DeMent offered a more traditional version that is slower and more accompanying
