Just can’t get over this one. The fill felt flat and the fill felt forced and now I was penetrating to pleasure myself. I think HOT TOPICS is fine, and STALE JOKE would have been fine with more accurate/specific clues—”routine” and “stale” aren’t exactly the same; The latter is much more value-coded, but I guess the “routine” wordplay was too tempting to dismiss. The cluing is what made it an uncomfortable to unpleasant experience for me. It looked like it was trying too hard to be clever, or else it was too humdrum. But mainly it was the fulfillment that put me off. I don’t really see what the marquee answers should be and Friday (best of all days) should have a bunch of them. “Are we alone?” Maybe a Saucier clue would have worked, or given it a more everyday context, but the supposed “question” of “humanity” doesn’t resonate with me at all. I’d like to end the question with “… in the universe?” TOADIEDUP is feeling awkward. NUTLETS, LOL, WHAT? Squirrels eat nuts. For example. I have never seen a squirrel eat NUTLETS in his or my life. I’ll ask the squirrels in my yard how the NUTLETS are today and I assure you they’ll laugh at me.

I watch a lot (a lot) of movies, and read a lot about movies, and while I’ll give you WAR EPIC (even though I don’t like it), I won’t give you ART CINE. The clue is in English, so the answer should be in English. An art film is one thing. CINE is a thing. ART CINE… I mean, really? Are you going to say that? Write that? It’s a fancy hybrid phrase I’ve never seen or heard of. SOOTS as a verb, also nonsense. By no means should you cross out E-READER and READE, especially if you are going to clue READE in relation to reading (54A: proper title for a librarian). Also, if you want me to have a good time, maybe don’t give me a STAPH infection and blood clots (crossing!).
I guess with the last two puzzles being extraordinarily, extraordinarily easy, the puzzle universe was bound to correct itself, and it sure did today, because I was just looking at some of these clues and wondering what they were doing. TAMES was difficult, mainly due to a weak/unclear formula (19A: control). Somewhat better but (again) difficult due to completely context-free clues (3D: A’s, but not B’s or C’s) (the TEAM in question is the Oakland A’s baseball squadron). I had to work on that section from the back end of the longer answers (PBJ, I love, look things up). VETO POWER got me into the NE pretty easily, but getting into the western part didn’t come easily to me. I was stuck here (-ish):
What is “Gaspard de la NUIT” (23D: Ravel’s “Gaspard de la ___”), and despite the “Z” that usually answers quickly, my brain just refuses to see SUN TZU (“The author of “Art of War”) ( 25A: Who said “the greatest victory is that which requires no war”). I was looking for a last name. BLITZ… FRITZI… maybe something Italian and WWII-related? Also, parsing CLOSEINON is too much for my morning brain today. was more (29A: nearer). So … vague proper nouns, other proper nouns, and hard-to-parse phrases stumped me. I had to go SW and work my way up, meaning the last thing that fell west. was (as you can see by the cursor on my finished grid, above – SCAR was my last answer). I struggled a little earlier when doing SE, because apart from the absurdity of ART CINE and NUTLETS, I got a mistake in one of the short answers there but very Reasonable assumptions had to be dealt with. Specifically, at 47D: Syndicate, in a way (REAIR), I had RERUN, which It’s a word one would actually use, but yes, REAIR , defensible; If your goal is maintainable, congratulations. It’s not that it didn’t have passable moments (“Nice catch!,” say), but mostly it just stuck and didn’t yield any high points. A lot of trivia, a lot of forced wordplay on the clues, not a lot of fun. Brain Scan Letters Crossword Clue.
