Chronologically, this translation belongs to the third book of Ficino’s writings (“Liber III”), which was published during his lifetime, and dates from August 1476 to May 1477. It follows volume 1 and was originally published as volume 2. Both books two and three of Ficino’s Letters is dedicated to King Matthias of Hungary whom Ficino considers to be the model of the philosopher king referred to in Plato’s “Republic”. Indeed, Matias was no ordinary king. He was one of the few Christian leaders who was able to successfully defeat the Ottoman Turks during the empire that grew almost continuously from the early 1300s until the death of Suleiman I in 1566. King Matthias was also a devotee of philosophy, very interested in practical learning. from Plato. Members of Ficino’s Academy resided at this court, and invitations to visit the court were extended to Ficino himself. Ficino’s Academy was consciously modeled on the philosophical schools of antiquity. It is not just an institution of learning. The bond between Ficino and the other members of the Academy is mutual love, based on the love of the Self in each person, a love that can be expressed in all areas of human activity. It is because that love is the basis of the School that Ficnio can write (letter 21) – “his desire, which strives for anything but love, is often very frustrated with the event. love itself, with the desire to immediately obtain, and in always obtaining the desire. ” This is the principle of unity to which Ficnio returns again and again in this volume. He returned to it not only as a philosophical concept, but as a direct understanding. In a letter to Paul of Middelburg (“the famous scientist and astronomer”), Ficino observed – “If any age can be called golden, it must be the one that produced the most golden thoughts. And no one considers the great discoveries. For this golden age , the almost extinct liberal arts: grammar, poetry, rhetoric, painting, sculpture, architecture, music and the ancient art of song. Marsilio Ficino (1433-99) directed the Platonic Academy in Florence and it was the work of this Academy that gave the Renaissance in the 15th century its impetus and direction. As a child, Ficino was chosen by Cosimo de’ Medici for an education in the humanities. Then Cosimo led him to learn Greek and later translated all of Plato’s works into Latin. This great task was completed in about five years. He later wrote two important books, “The Platonic Theology” and “The Christian Religion”, showing how Christianity and Platonic philosophy proclaim the same message. The extraordinary influence of the Platonic Academy exerted over the age arises from the fact that the leading spirits have sought new inspiration from the ideals of Greek and Roman civilization and especially from the literary and philosophical sources of these ideals.
