Bribe Crossword Clue 3 Letters

A pretty rough Saturday, more fun than yesterday’s puzzles, but I still don’t really see the way the marquee fills or the exciting seed entries. Usually you start an unthemed one with some cooler longer entries you want to use and build around them, so when I don’t see some real sizzlers on a Friday or Saturday, I’m wondering other than competent What’s the point of populating a grid of 72 or less. The only answer that really caught my attention (in a good way) was “who can say it?!”, which has a colloquialism I’ve always loved. WET MARTINI would have been lovely, but its thread was so bad that my answer was ruined (46A: drink dry absinthe, paradoxically). Hey, you know what is [dry absinthe]? Dry martini. The wetness of WET MARTINI is not the result of the ingredients themselves, as the clues suggest, but just a matter of proportion (WET MARTINI just has more absinthe). You can sarcastically make the drink wetter by adding more dry stuff, but the reference to the ratio of clues is zero (again, the core problem in WET MARTINI), so the whole thing is a hard fail. Paradox, shmaradox; a good answer spoiled. Maybe solvers are excited about POD RACES? (23A: Vehicles in “The Phantom Menace”). Not this solver. Ditto MEAT CASES (9D: some supermarket displays). SHAPEWEAR actually looks like a fresh entry (13A: some spandex clothing). It’s not showy, but it’s part of the sartorial spectrum that I don’t think is much represented in the grid. It’s hard for me to imagine a HIGH STEP that doesn’t involve show horses, or maybe… what’s the name of the guy who leads the marching band? Ah, Major Drum, yes. Maybe these are actually the required references (33A: Walk or run in a showy way). This answer is a bit flashy. But while all of these answers fit together nicely and there are no weak or objectionable parts of the grid, overall it still feels a bit bland. Lack of highs. I’m guessing that’s what “flat” means. So there you go.

These names seem to really trip up the solver. I know LUPE Fiasco and ELTON Brand very well, so those didn’t appeal to me, but Noomi RAPACE did, although I did see her earlier in the week. My wife is solving one of Joon Pahk’s excellent Rows Garden puzzles, which involves many six-letter words arranged in a circular pattern – these are the “roses” in the garden (there are also literally straight-through “rows”) “Rose”, they give clues separately, but I digress…). She completed the puzzle but was unable to match one of the completed “roses” to the clues on the list. Here’s an actress’ lead. So I tried to parse RAPACE from the circular arrangement of letters and wondered aloud “Is RAPACE someone?” Then my wife looked up. Sure enough, she’s a pretty successful actress, and she’s been…I definitely don’t want to say anything I’ve ever seen. She somehow managed to completely pass my movie radar (I’ve watched over 350 movies a year since the pandemic, although admittedly most of them are from the last century). So I learned her name from a puzzle, and three days later, when I needed it, I completely forgot about it. This doesn’t bode well for my senior solution. OK then. I manage. with a cross. Same.
