The theme is good, but going through it felt like a punishment where you’re just pushed out and poked in the ears and stuff in many, many tired loads. The problem started at 1-Across, honestly (1A: lab test) ( TEST ). Good word, you might say, and, uh, well, yes, it’s a word, but it’s a crossword, because I only see it there, and I don’t see it very often; and when words like that stack up, yikes. And it’s not just repeaters, it’s random stuff like ACTIV and crossword names like LHASA and LOIRE and then LAO ATOP ASEA PTA SARI GRU etc. in the full 15×15 experience. HORARE!? ICE CREAM!? Plus, there’s this particularly annoying tendency towards Scrabble-f*cking, with X’s and Z’s and multiple K’s thrown into the grid to either no good or very bad effect. None of these letters give you much bang for your buck, and the sections they’re in aren’t exactly pretty, and what the hell is going on anyway? LIVER? Is your “K” worth it? Letters aren’t interesting – good fill is interesting. Clean grids are nice. This is the direction you want to go. If you go in this direction, people can focus on the topic you’ve come up with, which is probably where you want to focus.

I have green ink all over the puzzle printout. A lot of it is just flagging the tedious fill, but some if it points to problem areas. I can never handle [Word that does this when you do] type cues, so SHE (15A: A word that becomes its opposite if the first letter is removed) crossing the “?” thread ASH (6D: the result of a layoff?) crossing LHASA (which I wanted to be LAPAZ or SUCRE) caused this whole area to slow down a bit. Also, HORAE, a term I know because I sometimes teach classical literature, is completely off, but there are so many groups of goddesses and my brain apparently just can’t sort them all out (36D: Goddesses of the Seasons). Went to ICEIN before FOGIN, of course (53D: Strand airport, probably). I think it’s about real attachment points. Except, no, I had trouble with the FRY part of VOCAL FRY, a phenomenon that is somehow both a widespread scourge and a thing I’ve never heard of or … maybe heard of but never quite understood. I thought it was just the jerk that comes after being yelled at, say, a concert or sporting event. It seems to be such a slang of recent coinage that the simple word “sign up” didn’t get me.

I’ll close by showing contempt for 59A: Display contempt for, in my own way (SPIT ON ), but I’ll just smile about it, because spitting in general is disgusting and spitting *on* someone is beyond the pale.
