Downcast Crossword Clue 8 Letters

Downcast Crossword Clue 8 Letters – I have things to do with my family this evening so I decided to skip the Clue themed game to solve the puzzle inside the crossword. You can read the theme explanation in Wordplay. If you solve the puzzle in .puz format, you’re missing the shading for the Clue “rooms” in nine grid sections, but it’s not hard to imagine they’re there with the clues and puzzle notes. Short form: each “suspect” answer is the first name of a famous person with a professional last name, ranging from TIKI Barber to GERARD Butler. The puzzle notes list the occupations, you match them, follow the instructions in the long thread clues/answers, and there you go. There is also a MCGUFFIN written around the black plus sign in the center of the grid.

I was definitely distracted by the strange 81st day. [Space to maneuver a ship], SEA ROOM (I have never steered a ship so this was not in my vocabulary) so close to 44 days. [The main source of oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere], seaweed and with “room” in some thematic data. Why is an awkward and dark entry like the Chamber of the Sea here, given those other issues?

Not loving the small size of the grid, with all those bits of 6’s and 7’s – consider the NE corner, where the subject … FAMOUS and TIKI are the only required completions, but we get the prefix ENTERO – and Unpleasant LOOPS. I think the grid pieces look more like the rooms in Clue this way, but I believe in puzzles having good padding all the time and I wasn’t digging this one.

I was told I would probably find this puzzle challenging today, and that wasn’t a lie. Probably the hardest solution I’ve had with a themed WaPo!

One thing I didn’t notice until I typed this now and underlined the floating letter is that each letter is

Moving forward, step by step. This is a great touch and I’m sure it added a lot of content. The left/right symmetry of the puzzle helps execute the theme.

I will say that for me I mostly solved this as no theme and I much prefer puzzles where the theme helps me instead of the filler. But I had a lot of trouble seeing the topic I was going to be with, and I was rarely able to “resolve” a field to help me. It felt like difficult anagrams! For example, I knew I wanted the letters WASTE in the answer to 72A [“Haste makes ___” (4)]. But I couldn’t see a STEW. I knew I wanted GRATED but I couldn’t see RATED G. ICHOR was brand new so I had no hope of finding CHOIR. Same for SPIREAS, which autocorrect wants to fix now.

As a little bonus, this puzzle appears in a Post Magazine special edition called “America, Resilient,” which included stories about hope and community-building amid the pandemic. So both the subject and the title are particularly apt.

Hey, it’s been a while since I saw Paul Coulter’s name on line! Like, at least a month!

Well, I like the idea here, but I’d be lying if I said I paid any attention at all to the actual elements, part of the data. Many of them I’ve never heard of and wouldn’t recognize their symbols anyway. But since the first piece of data actually points to the correct answer, why bother looking at the more difficult second piece? So this became more of a cerebral “Hmmm… interesting” thing for me.

Found this much harder than a typical universal around! The closing areas were 11D [Mature] ADULT as I had a hard time matching the two words and 26D [Take Rudely] GRAB as I read clues like “Speak impolitely” and refused to see it any other way.

Mailbag #2 — Wait But Why

Pretty simple and appropriate theme for a universal Sunday outing. I could be wrong, but I imagine the space this puzzle is filling (in general) is for easy 21xs—to give less experienced solvers something softer, but still solvable within a short time. Something to build confidence before tackling more complicated stuff. If so, this is a perfect fit for that niche.

Vividly fill in GREEN [Show envy, metaphorically], which could also work with a clue about seasickness, ERNESTINE [Lily Tomlin’s character at a switchboard], “…a ringy-dingy..,” and UPPERCUT. PEPSICO is a little trickier, especially for newcomers, but the rest of the long-filler, RELEGATES, UPWARDS, PILGRIMERS, are solid, if unexciting. On the shorter side, I don’t much care for MSS, and I’m not sure it’s widely known as shorthand for “manuscripts” outside of the publishing world. This could easily have been MST or even YSL which I believe are more common abbreviations.

I liked this theme even though it’s not really a word game and it’s not that challenging. It was consistent and fresh, at least for me.

What I didn’t know before doing this puzzle: that TESTAE are the seed pods of acorns. I didn’t need to know that.
