Elijah: Crossword Puzzle
TOPIC: NUMBER (40A: The theme of this puzzle) – sigh… so the theme is *kinds* of numbers, where each theme answer runs through boxes that are numbered with the type NUMBER the answer says:
[PRIME (2D) runs through boxes with the prime numbers 2 and 23; SQUARE (9D) runs through boxes numbered 9 (3 square) and 25 (5 square); etc.]
Word of the Day: IMGUR (19A: Large online site for uploading pictures and memes) – Imgur (/ˈɪmɪdʒər/ IM -ij-ər, stylized as imgur) is an American online icon of community and image sharing hosted by Alan Schaafin 2009. The service is popular for hosting viral photos and memes, especially those posted on Reddit. (wikipedia)
A textbook example of a “feat of construction” that has no relation to the actual pleasure of solving. The concept here is of course clever, but on the page it’s like being grinded as you wait for your last surprise and then your last surprise is just… A NUMBER? That’s your reporter! That’s the Big 40 – Across that everyone, single, has been telling me I have to go see? A NUMBER!? I laughed as I typed that answer in. Look, if all you care about is whether your number types run through the right boxes, let’s be honest: the only one of those answers you’ll really have a problem with is the one that really ingenious and maybe difficult, is FIBONACCI , and since I don’t even know what the FIBONACCI number is, the effect on me is zero (I am aware of the concept of the FIBONACCI series … .. .but the actual numbers involved, shrug, no idea, I’ll take your word for it). At the same time, all the theme announcements are the same, ugly and mechanical and dry and cross-referenced … how is that pleasing on an aesthetic level. There is no pleasure here in real words. The gimmick is purely mechanical. And the mechanics of the theme were, again, clever, but the solution was hard work without pay. I guess there are some number related bonus things here ( UNO / ONE, OCTUPLE ) but I don’t care… moving on.

I’m going to say about IMGUR what I said about JUUL yesterday and what I would have said about CRAPO the day before if I had written on Monday, and that is please think about what kind of ” new” that fills you with wanting to put it out into the world. I’m only vaguely aware of IMGUR (see “Word of the Day,” above), largely because I’ve diligently and almost completely avoided Reddit for its entire existence (although there are Reddit threads … subreddits? … about this blog; I read one once; it was … something!). IMGUR, no matter how popular, is not that good at filling. First, is there a finer letter string? How do you say it? Do you say it? I think it’s actually anagrams to “uglier,” and if not, well, you can see the resemblance. Second, for people who *don’t* know (and I absolutely guarantee you that I’m now talking about a large section of NYTXW solvers), all any of the IMGUR letters are meaningless, and there is no way to import any of them. . So it’s just a soup of letters. I think of the tens of thousands of people who are going to “get”
