Lions And Tigers And Squares, Oh My!

I didn’t know SOUND MIXING was an Oscar to begin with, so I had a weird hard time getting the MIXING part at the end. I originally had a DESIGN there. Then tried to squeeze into EDIT. But MIXING does a much better job of expressing the whole sound-equation thing going on in theme cues today, which I think basically works – that is, these themes are all phrases made from the combination (‘mixing’) of two sounds. The equation trick is clever, even if the topics are essentially ambiguous. I imagine the theme cues were written when the first part was completely dropped to make the revealer look back and realize, “Oh, right, that’s really two sounds mixed up,” but I think it’s more fun to have a weird sonic equation going on. This puts the theme into the mix so it can be visible and important to the puzzle, rather than just something you notice at the end. This makes the thread much easier to crack than usual, but with a tricky clue and two never-before-seen deadlines, the overall solving experience ended up being Thursday.

Not only had I never heard of BAIDU (12D: China’s major internet company) or RELAXIN, but I couldn’t guess any part of those answers, not even a single letter, so the crossword was really frustrating. If even one gets it wrong or ambiguous at all, I’m in a hell of a lot of trouble. As far as BAIDU crosses go, the only one that seems potentially problematic is ABE – maybe you’re not familiar with the old New York mayors, but I don’t know what other name could go with the A_E pattern. It is doubtful that any mayor was ever named ACE or AX. In the case of RELAXIN , the weak link is SNERT, a crossword familiar to anyone who has solved a puzzle since the 1900s, but not exactly a relevant or *completely* implied name. I can definitely see Hagar the Terrible Ignorant among us looking for a different letter in place of the “N”…although I have no idea what that letter would be. -IN seems to be the most common ending in a hormone name, so maybe the “N” was more implied than I thought. Anyway, I got it. BAIDU and RELAXIN were brand new to me and extremely hard to come by (no wonder neither of them ever made it to NYTXW).

The filling is a little rough in places. The whole NW and NW is like a wreck (ALTA ADMIN ANNO + ASSOC USBS LSU all abbreviated there). OXES is a pretty terrible streak (34D: Dumb ___ (buffoons)). HOW PIN is the bottom, even (especially?) with the cute “?” clue (24A: neat analogy?). I’ve heard of data mining, but I’ve never thought of a single DATA MINER as a thing (I imagine a person at a keyboard with overalls and a little lamp helmet). My only complaint is that I think data mining is much more nefarious/tracking than just “looking for patterns in statistical noise”, so the answer itself confuses me a bit. Normally I’d be pretty pissed off about LIZ Cheney too, but since she’s so vocally anti-Trump (and anti-Trump), I’ll let her pass. I originally wrote her as LYN, but that’s her mom (spelled “Lynne”). I think DO is a dupe for YES I DO and UPDO, but I really don’t care. I really liked COZY UP TO and “I’M ALL OUT”. This feels like the first puzzle I’ve (mostly) enjoyed in a while. A harbinger of a good weekend ahead (I want to believe). The Ig Nobel Prize is a series of ten satirical awards presented annually since 1991.
