This puzzle should not have been published on two grounds. First, it’s really thick. There really isn’t a theme. A grid-spanner, a jumble of circled squares, and then some totally random little stuff connected like it’s related, only it’s *very* related. I think you could find Beethoven “theme” stuff in any random grid if you really tried. The fate thing in particular seemed like a big draw. And the theme content is also not organized. There is no symmetry (except for DAF and OBOE (again, !!?!?!?! You can find OBOE in 37% of all grids, how is that a “theme”?!) It’s just a polished puzzle. No, and this is definitely not a Thursday-level puzzle (except for RIGI, which I’ve never heard of, this puzzle is played like a Tuesday or easy Wednesday).

The other reason it should never have made it to print is that we already have the Beethoven birthday tribute puzzle this year. Just three months ago. Not only this, it also features this exact musical gimmick. The. precise one this one The opening notes of Beethoven’s Fifth. Only in *that* puzzle, there was an actual theme, with the answers to the long theme and the aliases of the various symphonies “hidden” in the (non-consecutive) circled squares within those answers. And the opening four notes of the 5th symphony were a little bonus, represented in four squares in the NW, and then followed by the *next* four notes in the SE. The tricky part was that you had to rebuild the EFLAT into a square. Tough! I didn’t like that puzzle, but now, in retrospect, after solving it, it looks like a work of genius. I’ll link to that puzzle now (by David J. Kahn, 9/10/20), but I’ll also show you the finished grid, here you go:

Post Office Crossword

There see “EFLAT” square in NW, D(EFLAT) forming below ED. cute, right? And then FFFD later in the SE. And it’s just offered as a little extra. And yet those eight squares contain more theme content than the entire raison d’être of today’s puzzle (circled GG G EFLAT). And while today’s puzzle offers only a ragged patchwork of theme-related material beyond those opening notes, September’s puzzle had a full theme, beyond the opening notes. This
