Free Printable Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Letters
Free Printable Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Letters – Bill Martin Jr. has so many wonderful books and it was so hard to pick just one for this month’s VCB for Kids! But, after reading almost all of them, Chica Chica Boom Boom remains our favorite and the one that calls out to me, “Read! Read me!” So, I had to pick it up. I decided to go a little different with the book. Instead of coming up with a craft like I’d done before, I used the book as inspiration for a card game that could be played in a number of ways. I had a lot of fun recreating the images from the book. And I am proud of the end result.🙂
A told B and B told C I will meet you at the top of the coconut tree. Chica Chica Boom Boom Card Game

The first step is to prepare the cards for the game. The image below shows the front and back of the cards. To make a card, print out the templates below (just click on the image to download) and glue them back to back. I find it’s best to trim the edges on each page and glue them together (back to back). Repeat with the second set of alphabet cards (not shown). Cut along the lines and let dry. You now have a complete set of cards.

Laminate or cover card with contact paper for durability. Try hanging it on the fridge with magnetic tape on the back.
The second piece that needs to be assembled is the tree playing mat. Again, click on the image above to download, print and glue the two pieces together as shown below.
As I said before, there are many ways to use these cards. Here are some ways we tried.
Note: For some of these activities, you may want to have another set of cards ready.

Use the cards to practice recognizing and naming the letters of the alphabet. Cards can be placed face up and turned over or picked from the pile. Letter sounds can also be practiced this way. Use letter cards to practice putting letters in alphabetical order.
Use letter cards to sort vowels and consonants. For more information on how to do this, see our post: Teaching children vowels and consonants
Sort the letters according to their characteristics. In the photo below, the letters are sorted by ascendant and descendent.
Use the cards to create word families with different short vowel sounds. Try changing only the first letter of a word to make other words. Try changing the last letter of the word as well.

Schedulin’ Sunday: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Our story of the month for March is Chica Chica Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault. This classic book is great for helping your toddler practice recognizing letter names and sounds.
“A told B and B told C…I’ll meet you at the top of the coconut tree!” Those words start the funniest adventure of all the letters of the alphabet going up a coconut tree… crashing down when the tree gets too full! Good thing their mom and dad help them out of the mess. But will the characters learn their lesson or will they try to get back to the tree?
Check out these fun chicka chicka boom boom activities for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten that you can do after reading this story. Ideas include a snack, a craft, and free name and letter activities!
Incorporating these activities into your plans (at home or in the classroom!) will keep your preschoolers entertained while helping them learn important academic skills.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: Alphabet Activity
Adding snacks to stories really makes reading come alive for your little one! One of our favorite Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activities is making a snack that looks like a coconut tree (inspired by the pre-K pages). Let your little ones help make this healthy breakfast and watch them enjoy a story with their meal!
The more hands-on learning activities we can do with letter names and sounds, the better our preschoolers and kindergartners will remember. This is one of the simplest Chica Chica Boom Boom activities, but it’s a lot of fun and can be differentiated to challenge your students, no matter what their level. It is inspired by life, crafting and mom life.
Want to keep the fun going?! You can download and print this free activity for your students. It’s a great way to get them to practice the letters in their name!
First, ask students to find the letters in their names. They can mark them with dot markers, crayons, stickers or regular markers.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom has become the funnest alphabet book ever. The rhythmic rhythm of the language, the colorful cut-outs of Lois Ehlert and the letters that have a life of their own all contribute to its brilliance.
Plot. All the lowercase letters of the alphabet decide to climb the coconut tree. Will there be enough space? They all collapse when the toes are stubbed, the eyes turn black, and the skin falls off the knees.

Educational opportunities. This is probably pretty obvious, but I would definitely use this book to introduce your child to letters ;). If they already have a handle on their alphabet, use it to start further letter recognition practice and phonics skills.
Other resources. There are several song versions of the book that kids will love dancing and singing along to: One and Two. You can listen to a child reading here.
