Lena is here, covering a big old Sunday puz for Rex. So far it turns out that I’ve mainly covered Saturdays, sacrificing my Friday nights… that’s exactly what I’m doing: drinking wine and solving puzzles. Anyway, the idea of writing a themed puzzle, a themed puzzle, had me a little worried. What if the subject was crazy, incoherent, lost on me, impossible to describe? Well, I got lucky with it – a nice smooth berry delight. There’s really almost nothing to harp on, sustenance. The TESTEE (95D: Experimental Subject) isn’t very good and the SABER SAWS (80D: Tools used for cutting curves) is pretty sluggish as far as long fills go, but it’s pretty clean.

Also in the “oooooo” clue category I have [colonial house, you might say] for HIVE (108D). and [take heat from?] for DISARM (86D). I laughed at Mauna Kea as Phil, Clude [the beginning of many Hawaiian place names]. It is always KEA and LOA in the grid and “Mauna” in the Clue. it’s the little things.
When the subject is so direct, the weak spots become more apparent – a change of outfit now feels strange to me. “Carrie needed an outfit change.” I think “change of dress” is more natural—British-feeling, maybe—but of course it doesn’t work with the theme. Remember: You can’t win a mall.

With RNA (43a: codon carrier), it’s always a pleasure to see next-level nucleic acid trivia making its way. I had to remember which amino acids the codons called and how they formed their chemical structure, but I’ve forgotten now, thank goodness. I too once knew RAMEN only as [a food sometimes sold with flavor packets] and not the often-instagram-filled bowls of my adulthood. But you’ll only find me drinking Coke in the context of Cuba Libre– it tastes so much better when you say that instead of rum and coke.
And that’s all I have– it was a fun puzzle, and the happiest Sunday I’ve had in a while.
Oh, I believe Rex has made it here before, but Beaton (63a:pounds) needs to start with a reference to the smart, talented, and hilarious Kate Beaton, stat. As soon as possible NSEC ETC.
