Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the different rows or rows of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue and tries to find a word that answers the question with the same number of letters as the boxes in the corresponding line or row of the crossword puzzle.

Some of the words will share letters, so they will have to match each other. Words can vary in length and complexity, as well as clues.

I didn’t know SOUND MIXING was an Oscar at first, so the MIXING part was surprisingly hard for me to get in the end. At first I had DESIGN there. Then tried to get into EDITING. But MIXING much better expresses the whole sound equation going on in the topic data today, which I think basically works – that is, these topics are all phrases made by combining (“mixing”) two sounds. Tricking the equation is clever, even if the themes end up being essentially double. I can imagine that the theme notes were written with the first part completely removed, so that the discoverer would have you look back and notice, “oh, aren’t they, they’re really two mixed sounds of together,” but I think it’s more fun to have the weird sound equation going on. It puts the theme into the mix, allowing it to be visible and relevant to the solution throughout the puzzle, rather than something you notice at the end. This makes the theme much easier to crack than usual, but the generally difficult detection, as well as two terms I’ve never seen in my life, made the overall solving experience reasonably up to Thursday at the end.

Not only had I never heard of BAIDU (12D: The Big Chinese Internet Company) or RELAXIN, I had no way of deciphering any part of those answers, any single letter, and so working the crosses was really terrible. If even one went wrong, or was vague at all, I’d be in a hell of a lot of trouble. As for BAIDU crossovers, the only one that seems at all potentially problematic is ABE – maybe you’re not familiar with the old NYC mayors – but I don’t know what else the name could be with an A_E pattern. Doubtful any mayor was ever named ACE or AXE. As for RELAX, the weak link there is SNERT – a crossword puzzle familiar to anyone who’s been solving the puzzle since the 20th century, but not exactly a name that’s current or *at all* possible. I can definitely see the horrible-ignorant Hagar among us going for a different letter in place of the “N” … although I can’t really imagine what that letter would be. It seems like -IN is the most common hormone name ending, so maybe “N” made more sense than I thought. Anyway, I got everything right. BAIDU and RELAXIN were completely new to me, and especially hard to get (not surprisingly, neither of them have ever been a NYTXW entry before).

The padding is a little rough in places. The entire northwest and north are kind of a shambles (ALTA ADMIN ANNO +ASSOC USBS LSU all abbreviatedly lumped in there). OXES is a pretty terrible stretch (34D: Dumb ___ (buffoons)). NOT A PIN is bottom of the barrel stuff, even (especially?) with “?” data (24A: Pure analogy?). I’ve heard of data mining, but I’ve never thought of a single DATA MINER (I’m picturing someone at their console in baggy pants and a little lightbulb helmet). My only complaint there is that I think of data mining as a lot more sinister / surveillance than just “looking for patterns in statistical noise”, so the answer itself bothers me a bit. I’d normally be very bothered by LIZ Cheney as well, but since she’s so anti-Trump (and anti-Trumpist), I’ll let her pass. I wrote her at first as LYN, but that’s her mother (spelled “Lynne”). I think “DO” has been duped into “YES I DO” and UPDO, but I really don’t care. I really liked COZY UP TO and “I’m ALL OUT”. This feels like the first puzzle I’ve (mostly) enjoyed in a while.
