Gilders paste will stain your fingers, so we recommend applying it with a Q-tip, paper towel or cloth. It dries to the touch in ten minutes and fully sets in about twelve hours. When the paste dries and you put the lid back on the container, there is no smell!

Gilders paste works with any metal, but is most exciting for those who like to work with aluminum blanks, as we cannot use Liver of Sulfur or Silver Black on aluminum. There’s never been a more permanent option to darken your experience – until now! With Gilders Paste you can be sure that once you apply and let it dry, you can swim across the English Channel with your stamped pendants and their darkened letters intact! It is so waterproof! In fact, we put our stamped blanks through the dishwasher to see how they would hold up. Of course, these impressions remained gloomy even after the hottest cycles.

Artists and printers have been engraving on metal or wood for centuries, and there are volumes written about the art. Today, new laser cutters and other machines cut designs in plastics, gemstones, and other difficult-to-work materials. Despite all these rich and varied uses, you can start engraving yourself using only a few tools.

To engrave on metal, start by cleaning the surface with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Then trace the pattern onto the metal before securing it to the work surface with a clamp or vise. Then apply the tip of the engraving tool or chisel to the surface of the metal at an angle and gently chip off the pieces of metal. Try to start with a straight line for the first attempt, keeping the tool at the same angle throughout the engraving. Once you’ve finished the straight part, move on to more complex lines and shapes. To learn how to engrave on wood, read on! Most sign shops that offer engraving on special substrates already have this clear, so let’s move on to another task – engraved metal and filling with paint. In that case, how do you process a large metal panel that has a ton of small and large text that won’t fit the operating envelope of your hardware? Or if you can do that, how do you mask it to fill with paint after it’s etched? Many of the projects we work on involve different metals such as aluminium, bronze and stainless steel, and usually the metal surface is raw with a milled finish. The final finished surface is sometimes an afterthought for some.

If you’ve tried painting individual letters by hand with an eyedropper and a needle and ended up with a perfect result, then you’re a true craftsman. Unfortunately, some of us are not that talented and don’t have the time. Many are set up for engraving and spray painting, but when it comes to metal finishing, that’s a different story. This is when you hit the proverbial “brick wall” because without the right equipment it will be nearly impossible to achieve a perfect surface finish.

Here’s how you do it. First, choose the right metal based on what the project requires. If you have the ability to engrave, we recommend a minimum depth of 0.025″ for paint fill. Deeper is always better depending on the thickness of the material. If there are tool marks after engraving, remove them with a sandblaster with 150 grit silicon carbide or aluminum oxide. This will also give the surface more teeth for the paint to adhere to and prevent tool marks from penetrating the paintwork. You can then paint the panel surface but use a 2 part catalytic paint. Matthews paint is usually the standard for this. Do not use a paint rattle can, as it doesn’t harden like a 2-part and becomes soft due to heat during metal finishing which causes other problems. No need to worry about masking any text as that is covered in the next step.

There are many common misconceptions about the engraving process. “Can I engrave this in blue?” “Will it be black after engraving?”

You need to understand that the engraving process does not add color. All you have to do to engrave something is make a notch in the surface – think of it like scratching the surface of a tree trunk with a knife. For example, if your item is gold, the engraving will show the gold color of the metal underneath.

The engraving method we prefer to use for our customers has a slightly darker look; this is due to the fact that we use a laser to etch the surface of the object. This leaves behind a residue of burnt metal that washes away over time. Some customers ask us to leave everything as is, while others ask us to steam clean the item and remove the residue.
